Viborg Animation Festival: Where cobblestones meet cartoons 🎬

We bet you didn’t know that one of the world’s leading animation schools is right here in Viborg. Among the old city’s winding cobblestone streets and historic buildings, imagination has been running wild for more than 30 years.

The city is home to The Animation Workshop, a highly sought-after school attracting talent from across the globe. With connections to Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks, it’s a place where tomorrow’s animators learn from some of the biggest names in the business. And it’s helped earn Viborg the title of UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts.

And every September, Viborg Animation Festival gives that creativity a place outside the studios. Since 2012, the festival has grown into the largest animation festival in the Nordic countries, bringing together international filmmakers, artists, students and curious visitors for a week of films, exhibitions and hands-on experiences 🎨

New this year was VAF Land, a free festival area at Paradepladsen, where families could explore animation through outdoor film screenings, creative workshops and hands-on activities 🚀

Animation also found its way onto the city’s buildings. At Viborg Katedralskole, Viborgdrøm combined live music by Danish artist URO with visuals by Oskar Folmann, turning the school’s historic walls into a large outdoor canvas. A reminder that animation doesn’t always need a cinema screen ✨

Guide: 5 Beautiful Hikes in the Aarhus Region This Autumn 🍂

Autumn was made for hiking. As the forests turn golden and the air gets crisp, trails across the Aarhus Region lead through everything from Ice Age hills and deep-blue lakes to quiet landscapes and nature right on the edge of the city 🥾🍁

Lace up your boots and explore:

📍 Helligkildestien, Mols Bjerge – 4.4 km for a short hike through a landscape thousands of years in the making. The trail winds through dramatic Ice Age terrain, hollows and hills around Tinghulen – with grazing cattle and plenty to discover along the way 🐂

📍 Kalk Kaminoen, Viborg – 30 km for a journey through a landscape shaped by limestone. The trail follows the route between Viborg and Mønsted Kalkgruber, taking you through the Nørreå Valley and past traces of the area’s long history of limestone mining. Walk the full route or pick a shorter stretch for an autumn day out 🥾 

📍 Brabrand Sø, Aarhus – approx. 10 km for an easy escape from the busy city. Follow the path around the lake through autumn foliage, allotment gardens and wetlands alive with birdlife – all just a short distance from central Aarhus. And don’t forget to stop for a refreshment at Æblehaven 🦆

📍 Kongenshus to Stoholm – 13 km for a hike across the wide-open heathlands of Central Jutland. Starting at Kongenshus Mindepark, the trail takes you through a landscape shaped by heath, plantations and traces of local history, passing old limestone pits on the way towards Stoholm 🌾

📍 Silkeruten, Silkeborg – 12 km where city life, art and nature meet. Follow the trail past lakes and colourful forests, with cultural stops including Museum Jorn and the historic art center Silkeborg Bad along the way 🎨

Guide: An Autumn Day in Viborg 🍂

Viborg was made for an autumn day out. Cobblestone streets, centuries of history, changing leaves and plenty of places to warm up along the way. Start with freshly baked sourdough, wander through art and old architecture, head out into the autumn landscape – and, if you’re feeling brave, finish with a chilly dip 🍁

Here are seven stops for an ideal autumn day in Viborg:

📍 Start at Simpel Surdej with the smell of freshly baked sourdough and a cup of coffee. This local bakery was founded in Viborg by AnneSofie and Peter – a good place to fuel up before heading into the city 🥐☕

📍 Look up inside Viborg Cathedral, where history and art cover pretty much every surface. The cathedral has roots stretching back to the 1100s, while Joakim Skovgaard’s colourful biblical frescoes cover the walls and ceilings inside ⛪

📍 Step into Skovgaard Museum for art, history and a little shelter from the autumn weather. Set in Viborg’s old town, the museum tells the story of the Skovgaard family and their place in Danish art – right next door to the cathedral that became such an important part of their work 🎨

📍 Slow down in Latinerhaven, tucked right beside the cathedral. The small historical garden is filled with herbs, flowers and old trees – and in autumn, plenty of changing leaves too 🍂

📍 Head out to Hald Ege for an autumn walk and swap cobblestones for forest paths. The area around Hald Sø is made for walking at this time of year, with beech forest, hills and lake views changing colour as you go 🥾

📍 Go for a chilly dip at Nørresøbadet – because autumn doesn’t necessarily mean the end of swimming in Denmark. Take the plunge in Nørresø and you’ll get a small taste of the Danish cold-water swimming tradition 🌊

📍 End the day at Ølluminati with a b**r and somewhere warm to sit. The local b**r bar has plenty of homemade brews to choose from and makes a good final stop after a day of walking – and possibly swimming – around Viborg 🍺

Det Grønne Museum: Keeping history alive 🌱

Denmark’s national museum for hunting, forestry, agriculture and food, Det Grønne Museum (The Green Museum) in Auning, explores Danish agricultural history through the ages.

Outside, you can meet old Danish breeds of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry 🐄 In the fields and gardens, the museum grows and preserves old varieties of crops, herbs, vegetables and fruit that have been part of Danish agriculture and food culture.

The agricultural botanical garden has been part of this work since 1993. Nearby, the farmland is still cultivated, and the animals are part of an organic farm covering more than 60 hectares.

If you want to catch the museum at work, check the calendar before you go. On different days, you can meet the gardeners, watch the blacksmiths at the forge, peek into the tractor workshop or see what the Food Guild is cooking 🥕🔨

Or save a visit for the end of November, when the museum holds its traditional Christmas market. More than 60 stalls and activities fill the museum with crafts, historical Christmas recipes, baked goods and plenty going on around the old workshops 🎄

Nordisk Adventure Challenge: Adventure racing in Søhøjlandet 🧭

A map, a compass and a teammate or two. From there, you have to find your own way through the landscape of Silkeborg.
Nordisk Adventure Challenge sends teams out across the city, forests and lakes of Søhøjlandet, with the route unfolding one challenge at a time. Running and mountain biking are mixed with navigation, water activities, climbing and team tasks – and not everything waiting along the way is revealed beforehand 🗺️

There are three ways to take on the challenge. Fighter is the entry point, made for anyone who can run or walk 10 km and cycle 20 km, with 3.5–7 hours of different outdoor challenges. Challenge is for experienced recreational athletes, with longer stretches and around seven hours of navigation, running, cycling and water activities. And then there is Master: roughly ten hours in the forests around Silkeborg, made for experienced adventure racers who want the toughest version 🧭

Navigation and teamwork matter on all three courses. And the route makes full use of Silkeborg’s surroundings – through the forests, across the hilly terrain and straight into the water 🌲

Silkeborg Orienteringsklub has been putting the challenge together for more than 20 years.

Guide: An Autumn Day in Silkeborg 🍂

Silkeborg is made for autumn. The forests are always close by, and at this time of year they turn golden, red and everything in between. There are lakes for a chilly dip and saunas to warm up afterwards. And when the rain starts pouring, there’s art, lunch and hot coffee on the itinerary. But bring a swimsuit anyway 🍂

Here are seven stops for a day in Silkeborg:

📍 Start at Museum Silkeborg and meet the Tollund Man. More than 2,000 years old and remarkably well preserved, he was found in a peat bog near Silkeborg in 1950. Today, you’ll find him in the city’s oldest building from 1767 🏺

📍 Have lunch at Pladeshoppen Kaffe & Spisebar, where you can eat in moody retro surroundings with a good record playing. Grab a bite, have a look through the vinyl and enjoy the local life 🎶☕

📍 Make your next stop Museum Jorn by the Gudenå River. The museum holds a large collection of works by Asger Jorn, alongside modern art by both Danish and international artists 🎨

📍 Stock up for winter at Heksekosten, a small shop in Silkeborg packed with teas, vitamins and natural products. A good place to fill the cupboard before the colder months arrive 🍵🍂

📍 Walk the Hårup Sande route, a 4.2 km route takes you through pine forest and past Schoubyes Sø. The forest was originally planted to stop the drifting sand, and autumn adds mushrooms and changing leaves 🥾🍄 

📍 Bring out the swimsuit at Schoubyes Sø. The small lake sits surrounded by the forest of Hårup Sande, with little sandy spots along the shore. In autumn, the water is definitely on the fresh side – which is part of the experience 🥶🌊

📍 Get warm again at Brandt Pizza. Back in central Silkeborg, you can finish the day with sourdough pizza straight from the oven – a pretty decent follow-up to a cold dip in Schoubyes Sø 🍕

Hammel Hestemarked: A September tradition since 1972 🎠

The very first Hammel Hestemarked was held back in 1972. The beginning of September was chosen because the harvest would be safely in by then. More than 50 years later, the market still takes place at the same time of year, with hundreds of volunteers helping to make it happen.

The name Hammel Hestemarked literally means “Hammel Horse Market” – but these days, there is much more to it than horses. Ponies and veteran tractors share the grounds with market stalls, fairground rides, circus performances and music 🎪

It is the kind of September weekend where families and friends wander between the stalls, try their luck at the fairground and settle down on the grass for a while. A day full of fun, familiar traditions and plenty of local hygge in Hammel 🎡

Anholt is the most remote place in Denmark. In summer, visitors swarm the island, filling the harbour with their boats, drinking gin & tonics and dancing to the beat of soundboxes until morning. But what happens when summer is over and the last guet sails away? ⛴️

We took the three-hour ferry to find out what Anholt feels like when it goes quiet. Along the way, we met a tattooed gin brewer who also fights fires and delivers the mail, ate dinner in a greenhouse overlooking the sea and discovered how much work it takes to keep an island alive through winter ✨

Sol i September: A small festival at Maltfabrikken ☀️

September still had a bit of summer left in Ebeltoft. At the foot of the big red Maltfabrikken, people gathered around Rampen for an evening of live music, food and hanging out.

Sol i September was created as a small and intimate festival open to everyone. Entry was free, and the festival area was deliberately kept compact, bringing the stage, long tables and people a little closer together.

The evening started with communal dining and all-you-can-eat pizza, freshly made in the pizza ovens 🍕 Later, De 4 Maver, Kejser, NØK and Kliken took to the small stage, while kids got busy with paint, chalk and other creative activities.

Rampen Ebeltoft is an alternative youth culture house and hangout for young people in Syddjurs, and its skate surroundings became part of the festival setting too. The festival was alcohol-free, the food was vegetarian, and rugs, tables and places to sit filled the space outside Maltfabrikken 🛹

The smaller setup was part of the idea: communal dining, a compact festival area and plenty of opportunities to meet someone new along the way. Music was on the programme, but spending the evening together was just as much a part of it 🎶
