Forget the standard hotel room — some countries have gone all in on weird and wonderful. A new ranking counted bookable stays across eight unusual property types: caves, castles, treehouses, houseboats, windmills, lighthouses, earth homes, and domes.

France comes out on top with nearly 3,000 unusual listings — more than 1,000 of them castles alone. The US follows close behind with 2,533, spread across treehouses, domes, and converted water towers. Italy rounds out the top 3, driven by Tuscan castles, Puglia’s cone-roofed trulli, and cave dwellings carved into the cliffs of Matera.

The 50 released its 2026 ranking of the world’s best hotels , and this year’s top 3 all share one thing: scale so small it feels private.

Rosewood Hong Kong takes #1, set inside a 270-meter tower with Eastern-meets-Western interiors and suites up to 230 m². Capella Bangkok holds #2 with just 101 rooms total — built to feel like a private club, not a hotel. Four Seasons Bangkok rounds out the top 3, bringing resort-level pools and gardens into the middle of the city.

Forget the city center — Time Out's 2026 ranking says the best European experiences are happening one neighborhood over. Athens' Neos Kosmos takes the top spot, driven by a genuinely mixed community and a major arts center. Glasgow's Govanhill, once overlooked for pricier Shawlands, is now full of independent bookshops and immigrant-run restaurants that never left.

The pattern holds across the list — Rome's Esquilino, Rotterdam's Crooswijk, Amsterdam's Oost — former industrial or overlooked districts that locals actually live in, now worth a detour for the rest of us.

Vilnius just got a new slogan: "Never Ordinary" — and looking at Gediminas' Tower lit up at sunset, it's hard to argue.

Go Vilnius is rolling out the new tagline to pull in travelers, investors, and conference organizers, leaning into what actually makes the city work: it's small enough to see most of it in a day, but packs in culture, food, history, and nature without the crowds you'd hit in Europe's bigger capitals.

New research says the happiest place to travel isn't the one with the most landmarks — it's the one that's easiest on your body and mind. BookRetreats' 2026 Holiday Happiness Index ranked cities by green space, walkability, sunshine, sleep quality, and access to healthy food.

Lisbon takes #1, largely on food — 10% of its restaurants qualify as healthy-eating spots, paired with affordable prices and genuinely varied cuisine. Helsinki holds #2 with the most green space of any city on the list (126.4 m² per resident). Orlando rounds out the top 3, edging past Lisbon in sunshine with nearly 2,930 hours a year.

TUI Musement just released its 2026 ranking of Europe's most popular castles and palaces, based on review volume collected in July 2026 versus July 2023.

Prague Castle takes #1 with over 199,000 reviews — up 31% from three years ago. Buckingham Palace holds #2, and Vienna's Schönbrunn jumped two spots to #3, crossing 182,000 reviews (+41%). Versailles and Wawel Castle round out the top 5.

The one new face in the full top 30: Budapest's Buda Castle, debuting at #23 after a 65% jump in Google reviews. And Spain leads every other country by a wide margin — 6 of its landmarks made the list.

Separately, a related Appinio survey found 94% of Europeans want cultural or historical experiences on their next city trip, and 8 in 10 have already visited a monument close to home.
