Zainab Merchant, I feel so sorry that you had to go through that! Also for other hijabis and other minorities who go through this bu****it everytime they’re traveling.
I really wish this was a joke, but sorry guys it is not. Hijabis are getting more and more victimized, just by wearing a garnet shiver their head! 😓 I mean, how is THIS even okay to ask for!? Never have I ever experienced or heard of someone else experiencing something so horrific that they had to check what’s inside their clothes.
I’ve been in many airports, and therefore been through many security-controls, just like any other travelers. Mostly I don’t get pulled aside because I don’t “alarm” so they just let me go through.
But only last month at Nice airport, the security officer had to body-check us (my sister and I). The security-thing, that every traveler have to go through, did not make an alarm. But still the security-officer had to use that hand-alarm-thing (no idea what it’s called) and further; use her hands on our body and underneath our hijab.
I was shocked that we had to go through all that just because we had a piece of cloth covering our hair.
I just had to ask the security officer: “Why do you have to do all this?” She did reply; “because you’re wearing a hijab”
“So you should only check what’s under my hijab not my whole body since I didn’t alarm”.
She didn’t have any answer, and just said: “I’m Muslim too”
I kindly replied that it’s not her that I’m questioning, it’s a stupid rule since we’ve never heard of a Hijabi doing anything “terroristic” (if that’s even a word).
On my next airport control in Barcelona, the security-officer only checked my Hijab, which is FINE! I don’t mind!
This is only one incident out of many, let’s not talk about what happened in the airport in Athens or Panama 😑 I will save those stories for another time 😝
Have you had any experience? I would like to hear what others are going through on their journeys!? 😇
