Tide Lines: From London to Italy

Oceanology International once again brought the industry together. For MacArtney Italy, the week centred on focused client meetings and early interest in our new 10Gbit/s TrustLink Data harness solution for trenching and advanced survey systems, a strong indicator of where the market is heading.

Vincenzo Mauro, Managing Director – Italy, summarises it well:
“We held a focused set of meetings with clear project opportunities and next steps. It was encouraging to see strong interest from Italian companies keen to stay updated on the technologies driving progress in their field.”

One of those conversations was with Next Geosolutions (NextGeo), a long‑standing marine geoscience and offshore construction support provider. We are pleased to share one of the first tangible outcomes of our ongoing dialogue:

👌🏻 The decision to upgrade its MacArtney ROTV with the advanced EdgeTech Marine eBOSS (buried object sonar system), adding advanced detection capabilities and improved performance for future subsea survey tasks.

NextGeo describes it as an important move:
“This step reflects the strong technical momentum highlighted at OI, and the shared vision, trust, and constructive cooperation we are building with MacArtney.

Partnerships like this represent a strategic opportunity for us to open new development pathways, explore innovative solutions, and further enhance our operational capabilities, ensuring we continue to meet the evolving demands of the offshore market. We look forward with enthusiasm to the next steps of this joint journey, confident that the technical exchange and synergy between our teams will generate real value for future projects.”

🌍 The OI conversations also reinforced the importance of MacArtney Italy’s new role as a reference point for Eastern Europe, helping clients connect with the right MacArtney specialists across the region and ensuring they get the support needed for both local and cross‑border operations.

A quarter century at MacArtney – leaving a lasting mark

Hans-Jørgen Hansen retired at the end of January 2026 after 25 years during which he has made a meaningful and lasting impact on MacArtney, strengthening our customers, colleagues, and organisation.

As a key contributor to the development of MacArtney’s Ocean Science market and technologies, he has helped shape solutions now operating in some of the world’s most demanding waters. Together with dedicated colleagues, he played an essential role in advancing the TRIAXUS and FOCUS vehicles.

Customers have also experienced his deep passion for the ocean and the science that drives it. His participation in the SAS21 expedition quite literally placed MacArtney's footprints at the North Pole, a testament to his commitment to both technology and purpose.

Inside MacArtney, he has helped strengthen our onboarding culture and been a valued host for visiting partners and guests.

Thank you for your contribution, Hans‑Jørgen – and for the footprints that reach far beyond HQs.

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Anders Kronborg to our HQ in Esbjerg.

The visit provided an opportunity to showcase our technologies and production facilities, and to discuss developments within underwater equipment, including the surveillance of critical underwater infrastructure.

As Denmark continues to strengthen its focus on protecting vital underwater assets, visits like these offer a valuable opportunity to share how Danish engineering and subsea expertise contribute to national resilience and maritime safety.

With MacArtney solutions deployed worldwide, surveilling underwater infrastructure is both a local responsibility and an international commitment. It is an area where Danish know-how continues to make a global impact.

The visit was hosted by Bjarke Ovesen, Sales Director - Naval, and attended by CEO Niels Peter Christiansen, who welcomed the opportunity to share insights from across our organisation.

Thank you, Anders, for an open and constructive dialogue and for your genuine interest in the work our teams carry out every day in the underwater technology sector.

Sea trials in winter light ❄️

Our team was recently out on the Aurora in Aarhus together with Fraunhofer IGD, carrying out SAT and testing on a sensor-packed FOCUS 3 ROTV. With clear frost in the air and a bright view of the city from the water, it has provided the perfect backdrop for real-world validation.

Joining us on board are our long-time partners from EdgeTech Marine, supporting the integration and operation of the eBOSS system as part of the current test activities. With multiple specialists working side by side and one of the most extensive sensor configurations we have deployed on a FOCUS 3, these trials provide valuable insights for the ongoing work.

A dedicated handling system is also part of the setup, enabling safe and efficient launch and recovery throughout the test programme.

This particular setup brings together contributions from several trusted partners — including EdgeTech Marine, Valeport, Kraken, RESON, Sonardyne and DeepSea Power & Light — forming a combined sensor suite of

✅ Multibeam echo sounders
✅ Synthetic aperture sonar
✅ 3D volumetric sub‑bottom system (eBOSS)
✅ Magnetometers
✅ Environmental sensors
✅ Lights
✅ HD visual systems

all working together to deliver a high‑resolution picture of the subsea environment.

It is a pleasure collaborating with everyone involved, and a good reminder that full-scale sea trials from the Aurora remain an available option for clients who want to verify performance before moving into operational deployment.

Skills in motion. Aligning best practices across sites.

In underwater technology, every hour matters. By sharing best practices, we make the most of every open window to keep systems running.

Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting our US colleagues, Jose S. Gonzalez, Service Technician, and Carlos Funes, Workshop Manager. At our HQ workshop, they quickly felt at home among tools, connectors, vehicles, and people.

They helped build and trained to service a customised modular winch, ran service checks on connectivity solutions, ensuring every step aligned with how to best secure uptime and operational continuity.

⏱️ “Some customers only have a 48-hour window, including our travel time, to get their equipment checked and up and running again,” Jose explains.

“We keep inventory for quick turnaround. Some systems allow for swapping modules or parts. Others need to be built from scratch. Either way, the goal is the same: minimal downtime for the customer,” Carlos adds.

With underwater technology constantly evolving, some systems are new to both, even after 12 years (Jose) and 19 years (Carlos) in the company. But that’s part of what keeps the job exciting.

“I don’t think of MacArtney as a large, global company,” Carlos reflects.
“Right! You’re not just a number,” Jose agrees.
“I think ‘family’! It’s personal. When you meet and train together, you learn how and why things are done, and you meet the person behind the name and the mastery,” Carlos concludes.

This is the MacArtney way: connecting people, sharing expertise, driving culture, and ultimately ensuring readiness.

From deep-sea data to desk drawers!

We are used to deep water, literally.

From subsea monitoring to marine research, from fish to fibre, from data acquisition to connectivity, from seabed to surface, we are not easily spooked.

But being thrown into deep water in a different sense, like clearing out drawers and cupboards during a major office reshuffle at HQs? That is a whole other kind of challenge. Scarier than Halloween? Almost.

To mark the big "clean up and out" day, our HR team went all in. The reception area transformed into something resembling a horror house, complete with cobwebs, creatures, and a few surprises.

Did we handle the clean-up procedure with the same courage as we show in the depths of the ocean?

We dare you to find out 🎥

(We recommend sound if possible.)

🥳 Another 25-year celebration!

A quarter century of teamwork – Thank you, David!

In 1999, David MAZZOCHI, Managing Director, joined MacArtney France, just as the company was taking shape.

Since then, his journey has been closely tied to the development of our French operation, supporting customers across marine and offshore, ocean science and naval sectors.

Last week, the team in Rousset gathered to mark David’s 25th anniversary with a lunch alongside Group Top Management and colleagues from across the French office.

Here is to the journey, the teamwork, and the people who make it all possible.

Founded by a visionary. Grown by a team. 25 years strong!

In 2000, MBT – Meerestechnisches Büro Turla – joined the MacArtney Group.

Founded by oceanographer Torsten Turla in 1997, MBT brought deep expertise in hydroacoustics and a clear vision:

🎯 to deliver marine sensing solutions for science and subsea engineering

Since then, the team in Kiel, and now also Bremen, has grown into MacArtney Germany. From hands-on service and system integration to tailored solutions for survey, research and defence, their journey has been one of steady evolution and strong collaboration.

Here’s to 25 years of shared ambition and trusted teamwork.
And to the people behind it all.

Congratulations, MacArtney Germany!
