Meet Storyboard Artist Jakob Foged

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀?
Well, I would like to say something very profound, so here it goes...
"Breaks!"
REAL breaks.
Not just the 2-3 min coffee run, that I use for procrastination (which I also do), but breaks - not talking to anyone, walk around the block etc. Breaks are not separated from work, they are part of work and the creative process.
Another one for me is "Writing" instead of drawing. Doesn't have to be good but after 20 years I can still write faster than I can draw. And I like to read as much as I have the energy to.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗴? – 𝗔𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲?
I Will have to say again that the community here is great. A few honorable mentions would be - The lakes, the old part of town, Søster Lagkage and Ølluminati.
But the main thing I like about Viborg is that quietness to it and that everything is very close.
I like it here for a while. Maybe for long, but maybe not forever.
There are a lot of things to see in the world. I might leave but I always love coming back.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀?
Let it simmer! I find it’s best to step away and do something completely different — work with my hands, touch grass, cook some good food, anything that gives my brain a break. I also make a lot of notes on my phone just before going to sleep. That’s when my brain is at its most relaxed and then often the solution I’ve been looking for appears.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗴? – 𝗔𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲?
I love that Viborg feels small and cosy but still has such a strong creative community. Everything is close by, and it’s a really great place to have a kid — we’ve become quite the experts on the various playgrounds around town, haha. I do miss the coffee and café scenes in London though… so if there’s one thing I’d happily import from London to Viborg, it might be that!

My favorite thing (which is also my least favorite thing, depending on the day) is how small and cozy it is. It's easy to delve into a routine and not lose track of one's creative process

Meet Blåben Studio - Our resident at Arsenalet and a team from our Incubation.
Blåben used their time in the Incubation to create a game studio and got help from our partners at Business Viborg to figure out how to become a company.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴? 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀?
We are just about to start very early production of our first proper game together, called Stormfugl. We are hoping to end up with a game we can all be proud of, and have it lead to us being able to do even more cool games in the future. Additionally, we would love to get to a place where we can be the ones helping new game developers find their footing. We have already received so much support from this community, and we can't wait to pay it forward.

Living in a place that, albeit small, has most conveniences you need, while still having some wonderful nature within arm's reach, is amazing! Be it the parks, the lakes, or just the little gardens downtown, they really brighten your mood. If you visit Viborg, and you like ice cream, make sure to check out Vannis Is downtown. Their ice cream is amazing!

I go for loooong walks!! Rain, sun, or windy weather — it doesn’t matter. Other than that, I talk with my friends and coworkers sitting around me to get my frustrations out, and by doing so it helps, even if only slightly, with my creative block.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗴? – 𝗔𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲?
I’ve been living in Viborg for 10 years now, and I’ve come to love a lot of things about it. The historical parts of the city and the cathedral are really beautiful. Events like the Christmas market and the summer music festivals are also amazing!
Any secrets?? Hmmm… not much of a secret if I tell it haha, but the secondhand stores here are really good. You can basically furnish your whole apartment for a great price.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴? 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀?
We have some really great projects going on - most of which we can’t say anything about! (sorry)

Our wish, as is the wish of many in our small industry, is to create a sustainable future for animation. We think Danish Animation has a lot to offer the wider industry - not just the great talent, but also a mindset that is uniquely collaborative and in our eyes, can lead to a much more rewarding, more productive work culture. The struggle is to bring enough turnover into the animation business, and we hope some of the new political initiatives will help get us there (like the Production Incentive Scheme).

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀?
I’m not sure we have the luxury of getting stuck! The Hydralab approach is very much about staying in motion and seeing the work from a distance as much as up close. When things start to get stale, we try to mix it up, or switch perspectives, or jump onto something else and come back later. There is a flow in the creative process, and working together with a team is as much about finding the pulse of the work process and helping nurture it, as it is about the products that we produce.

𝗔𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲?
Our open secret is maybe that our approach is centered around the idea that animation is fundamentally a work we do together, and that the most rewarding, and sustainable process is a shared one. That takes dedication to keep sight of, and we can sometimes lose it for moments in the thick of a project, but I think our experience shows that we wouldn't be able to deliver the quality of work we do without a strong commitment to fostering a collaborative workspace.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗢𝗹𝗱𝗿𝘂𝗽 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻?
I've been slinging homemade art, dice and merchandise over the counter at fan conventions since I was a teenager. After getting a BA in Graphic Storytelling, I needed a company model that reflected the wide variety of work I do. Writing, drawing, product design and manufacturing, motion graphics and much more if I could only find the time... The only real way of doing everything was self-employment. So that's what I've been up to, since I started my company back in fall. It allows me the freedom to sit and polish dice one day, then go work on a comic the next. And I think that variety is what keeps the work fresh and fun to me. I thrive in the creative chaos!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗴? – 𝗔𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲?
Viborg has this unique ratio of creative people per capita compared to the average rent. I can't think of anywhere else where you can have such a huge, creative community and also survive on art fresh out of school. It's a luxury!
