North Coast animals have guardian angels of their own
Dogs and Cats of the Dominican Republic is a nonprofit organization dedicated to animal welfare on the north coast.

We have spayed and neutered thousands of animals, provided outreach care and emergency medical treatment. We have rescued thousands of cats and dogs and rehomed them to the United States, Canada and some have found new homes here in the Dominican Republic.

We have a mobile clinic which enables us to deliver our services to other locations, provided we receive funds or donations for that type of campaign.

We often work with volunteers from World Vets and other organizations and even though various prestigious businesses support our work, we still need a steady source of income to continue our efforts.

Our Sanctuary, specifically designed to hold cats and dogs has been established in Luperon where we are housing approximately 100 dogs.

Also, our members foster many more in their own houses.

Our outreach program aids animals within poor communities, providing vitamins, deworming and other needs. In some cases we find animals with tumors or mutilations and we take them to the local veterinary clinic and pay for the procedures.

Ethical Education on the Treatment of Animal Program, was designed to bring appropriate education to public school children ages from 8 to 14, it was started this years and will continue with the support and help from donors and volunteers.

Anyone visiting the area of Cabarete, Sosua, and Sabaneta will be witness to the results of our work and other north coast animal groups.

We are looking for more companies and individuals to sponsor both our educational program and our mobile clinic to reach the total national territory with our spay and neuter program.

We have established fund raising events that are becoming tourist destinations on their own, like the Annual Woofstock event, with the participation of many artists, singers, face painting, vendors, bar, etc.

The next Woofstock will be held on May 3rd 2019.

Another popular event is our 11th annual Tom Whitehead, Bent Putter Classic Golf Tournament, to be held on November 17 at Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata, more information can be found on our webpage, dogsandcatsdr.com

Overpopulation of stray animals is a huge social problem that if it is not treated or dealt with, affects the environment, public health and the tourist industry.

Therefore we are appealing to businesses and individuals to help us with this situation. We believe that spay and neuter with education are the answers to permanently resolve the overpopulation problem and the resulting animal cruelty.

We are looking forward to extending our work all over our country especially in the parts where our work is little known. With your help we can achieve this goal.

Dominican Republic named Latin America and Caribbean’s Best Golf Destination 2019
Tour operator members of global golf tourism organization IAGTO have voted Dominican Republic the “2019 Golf Destination of the Year for Latin America and the Caribbean”. This is the fourth time Dominican Republic has been recognized as the go-to destination for golf travel by IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators), making it the most celebrated destination in the region.

“We have worked diligently to establish Dominican Republic as the go-to destination for golf and are thrilled our hard work and breathtaking infrastructure is treasured by the tour operator member of IAGTO Latin America and the Caribbean’s Best Golf Destination 2019,” said Magaly Toribio, Marketing Advisor for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism “Golf is an integral part of Dominican Republic’s tourism, and we are thrilled that our golf offerings continue to be recognized by the international golf community.”

The World Golf Awards, a subsidiary of the World Travel Awards, serves to celebrate and reward excellence in golf tourism, world class courses and golf destinations. Votes were made by professionals working within the golf travel and tourism industry – senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators, agents and media professionals. Votes were also cast by the public (golf tourism consumers). The voting worked on a first-past-the-post system to ensure impartiality and independence. Votes were submitted online via the World Golf Awards website. The winners of each national award went head-to-head with the winners of the other countries for the “Best in the World” title announced during the IAGTO Awards Gala Dinner on the evening of Thursday, October 18 at the International Golf Travel Market in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

With 86 sea-facing and 39 ocean-side holes, the country’s 26 challenging and stunning courses have helped Dominican Republic maintain the Golf Capital of the Caribbean. The country’s flagship courses include the Pete Dye-designed trifecta at Casa de Campo resort in La Romana, which features Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore and The Links. From the British-inspired hills, lagoons and lakes at The Links to the challenging sea-facing holes at the world-famous Teeth of the Dog, Dye’s courses embody an elusive combination of variety, difficulty and natural beauty.

Other courses at the top of every golfer’s bucket list include the Jack Nicklaus designed Punta Espada. Listed among the world’s finest, the course offers eight holes that overlook the sea. From all points of Punta Espada, golfers are blessed with extraordinary views of the Caribbean, where the sea contrasts against the emerald fairways and the perfect greens.

Playa Dorada on the north coast, designed by the legendary architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr., featuring five holes with sea views and one directly adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. For an inland challenge, golfers flock to Guavaberry Golf & Country Club near the capital city of Santo Domingo. The course borders a nature reserve and features a 15-foot waterfall and coral rock formations that add dramatic visual interest at holes 9 and 18.

This announcement comes on the heels of the country’s second annual Dominican Republic PGA Tour, March 2019. Puntacana Resort & Club and the Dominican Republic are preparing to host the second edition of the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship March 25 to 31, on the resort’s 18-hole course — a Tom Fazio creation that boasts six oceanfront holes set on rocky cliffs next to the Caribbean Sea.

Whether inland or along the coast, you’ll find yourself at home on the greens of the most magnificent golf courses in the Caribbean. Learn more about Dominican Republic’s world-renowned golf offerings and begin planning your trip at www.GoDominicanRepublic.com.

Over 16 countries attend business tourism event in Dominican capital
More than 130 delegates from 16 countries, hoteliers, representatives of local companies and the national tourism sector participate in the first business tourism event “SDQ Santo Domingo MICE” in Dominican Republic’s capital.

The gathering that concludes today showcases the Meetings, Conventions and Events (MICE) segment, with hoteliers, event producers, airlines, tour operators and companies on the same stage on destination management, among other sector entities.

It hosts buyers from the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay, Argentina, Costa Rica, Panama, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands, Poland and Germany.

In addition, the activity includes the presence of 50 local companies from the main tourist poles and other cities in the country that exhibit their products and services

Santo Domingo “meets all the conditions to be placed and remain a leader in the segment” of Meetings, Events and Conventions, said Tourism minister, Francisco Javier García.

That potential “is evidenced in the progressive amount of activities of that nature” that are held in the country, said the official when attending the opening of the event.

In a statement the Tourism Ministry said that for the Dominican Republic, the MICE segment is a great opportunity,” given the advantages it has over other countries and the sustained positioning achieved in the tourism industry.”

“We have what many countries do not have” in terms of air and road connectivity, hotel facilities and number of rooms, said Garcia. “We receive the largest amount of investment for new projects.”

He added that it’s an “excellent opportunity to advance in the segment, it is enough to observe the transformation exhibited by the Dominican capital” thanks to the renovation of all the rooms, the construction of modern hotels, and Santo Domingo’s diversity of attractions.

Young Dominican inventors come up with innovative ideas
An eco-friendly deodorant and an electricity-generating gym are just two of the 12 innovations created by 12 high school graduates who took part in the Innovative Summer Camp (CVI) organized by the National Office for Industrial Property (Onapi).

They also created an air purifier, a multipurpose water and salt lamp, and a dual-function anti-asphyxia mask for occlusion and toxic gases.

Onapi set up the program with the aim of improving the Dominican Republic’s innovation ecosystem and diffusion of Industrial Property.

The finalists presented their projects to a panel of judges made up of CVI facilitators, Onapi patent examiners and representatives from several institutions.
