Back after a superb four weeks in Zimbabwe, on the second part of our trip beside the highlights we also managed to see several sites which we missed the previous year. The trip account is in the works.

Completed the first part of our round of Zimbabwean rock art sites, we have managed to visit a good number which we did not see on our last years' expedition. Another two and a half weeks to go :)

Just down from a four day trek to the Upper Brandberg, the toughest climb (and descent) I have ever made, visiting the cluster of sites under the Zisabspitze which were documented by Harald Pager in 1984 (but never published) and were probably not visited ever since. We ascended the very steep tributary of the Tsisab Gorge forking to the left just after the 'White Lady' paintings, with several unexpected rain showers overnight and extending to the following days. On the descent we unexpectedly came upon a fine undocmented site about half-way up the valley. Heading to Zimbabwe tomorrow for some more superb rock art.

We had one of our best trips ever to the classical sites of the Tassili n'Ajjer this past March, locating a huge number of rarely visited paintings, and finding several undocumented ones in the process. End of an era...

Just received the sad news that yesterday Rudolph Kuper departed towards the west for the last time. It was a privilege to have been able to call him a friend and mentor, his immense knowledge and sound advice will be sorely missed.

Back from an outstanding two week trek on the Tassili n'Ajjer (Tamrit - Sefar areas), many of Lhote's "lost" sites relocated, plus we found an astonishing number of undocumented sites, some right next to the major known ones.

At the Rock Art of the Eastern Sahara session of the 2018 IFRAO conference at Valcamonica I gave a presentation on the latest results of the Jebel Uweinat rock art survey. After some discussion with the session chairs it was agreed that the publication will provide a full overview of all rock art research done at Jebel Uweinat and the surrounding massifs since the early 2000s, to be co-authored with all those who collaborated on this immense two-decade project. It was a long wait, but the publication is finally out:

With the mid-winter doldrums I managed to complete the account of the Tibesti Mountains expedition while the memories were still fresh. One of our key objectives was to find and see some sites missed on our first trip 12 years ago, and to search the area where in 2014 we found a splendid site with paintings, the only one known from the central Tibesti. We did find a few new sites, though the area was not as rich as hoped. As an added bonus, we got to see the Kozen valley, where we also made a few new finds:
