Jatumpamba Hike Tour, Land of Potters
Date: Sunday, June 1, 2025

Located one hour from Cuenca is the community of Jatumpamba, Cañar, where an ancient tradition endures over time: the production of ceramic pieces using the artisan technique of the “Huactana” or clay knockers. This technique was used by the Cañaris according to archaeological remains found in the provinces of Azuay and Cañar.
Our adventure begins hiking the Pichahuayco Protected Forest, a communal land of montane forest, where we can appreciate beautiful landscapes covered with native vegetation. We will also visit “Mirador Los Machorros”, a hidden mountain viewpoint with a fantastic view of the Cuenca and Azogues valleys, then we descend toward the community of Jatumpamba in the middle of fertile corn crops, where we will visit a pottery workshop, and we can appreciate the variety of products made with the ancestral Huactana technique.

TREKKING EL PLATEADO

Just 30 minutes from Cuenca is the natural area “El Plateado”, named for its shiny gray rock, a site with great historical value due to the archaeological remains and animal fossils found here. We invite you a hike along its rocky paths to admire the native flora and fauna of the
area such as brooms, orchids, bromeliads, and birds such as blackbirds, sparrows, hummingbirds.

Ancestral Hikes: Cerro Guagualzhumi

According to the Andean cultures, the hills are recognized as "APUS", gods whose souls live in the mountains.
We invite you to a hike to the Guagualzhumi hill, which gives us a spectacular view of the great valley Cuenca—Azogues and functioned as a ceremonial sanctuary and astronomical observatory of the ancient Cañaris.
While we walk along its rocky ridge, we will appreciate native vegetation such as orchids, bromeliads, puyas, and many more.

Chobshi Ancestral Hike
Date: sunday, february 23, 2025
From Cuenca, we drive towards the eastern area of the Azuay province, to the Chobshi community, Sigsig, where we can find the Cañari Ruins of Cacique Duma, a few meters away we can appreciate the Chobshi Black cave, the testimony of primitive inhabitants in the area 10000 years ago. We will hike through Chobshi Hill and the beautiful Pailon Canyon and visit the community museum.
Before back to Cuenca we will visit the Guitar workshops in “Ruta de las guitarras”, San Bartolome.
Live this outdoor experience and witness the local history and culture.
