People come to Galápagos to see the incredible wildlife that makes these islands so special. But every once in a while, it’s nice to be reminded that the feeling might be mutual.

A curious marine iguana pauses among the rocks, comes a little closer, and takes a good look at the visitors.

And right then, you realize you’re not just the observer; you’re part of the encounter.

Pelican Bay, one of Puerto Ayora’s fishermen’s markets, is one of the best places in town to see wildlife up close. Sea lions, marine iguanas, pelicans and other coastal birds are regular visitors here.

Some of our favorite moments happen after our guests return home, when they share the memories they took with them.

Lisa and her family visited us last month, and reading her words reminded us why we love what we do. Knowing that a family felt relaxed, welcomed, and truly connected to the spirit of Galápagos is the greatest reward we could ask for.

Growing up in Galápagos means the ocean is never far away.

But learning to truly understand it is something else.

At the Santa Cruz Sailing Club, young islanders develop confidence, independence, and teamwork while discovering the power of the wind instead of the engine. Every lesson on the water becomes a lesson in patience, responsibility, and respect for the environment they call home.

This past weekend, those lessons came to life as young sailors traveled to San Cristóbal to compete alongside the San Cristóbal Sailing Club. More than a tournament, it was an opportunity to challenge themselves, build friendships across the islands, and celebrate a shared passion for the sea.

These experiences help shape the next generation of Galápagos, fostering not only skilled sailors but young people with a lifelong connection to the ocean and the islands they call home.

Community projects like this are part of what makes Galápagos so special—not only for those who visit, but for those who are fortunate enough to call these islands home.

Sea lions spend much of their day resting, recovering energy after feeding in the ocean.

So if you come across one fast asleep on the beach, give it space, enjoy the moment, and let it continue its nap undisturbed.

And if you listen closely... you might even hear it snoring.

Every year, between May and July, thousands of tiny marine iguanas emerge from nests hidden beneath the sand. For these little reptiles, life begins with one very important mission: don’t get eaten.

This Blue Heron clearly got the memo.

With legs that seem way too long and a beak built like a spear, it patiently stalked one young marine iguana, convinced it had found the easiest lunch of the day. Meanwhile, the baby iguana had other plans.

After a game of hide-and-seek that felt much bigger than its tiny size, the little escape artist disappeared into a bush... and the heron walked away empty-beaked.

Not every hunt ends with a meal, and not every hatchling gets caught. In Galápagos, every day is a reminder that nature writes the best stories.
