We would like to share an important update regarding visits to certain sites in San Cristóbal.
According to the Special Law of Galápagos, some visitor sites — including the Tortoise Breeding Center (Centro de Crianza) — are only allowed to be visited with a certified naturalist guide.
While this regulation has existed for some time, it was not strictly enforced. However, starting from March 23rd, it will be fully applied.
This means that if visitors arrive at these sites without a naturalist guide (for example, only with a taxi), entry will not be permitted.
Previously, it was common to visit places such as El Junco Lagoon, the Tortoise Breeding Center, and Puerto Chino by hiring only a taxi. This will no longer be possible under the new enforcement.
For this reason, we recommend organizing a guided tour to the Highlands, which can be half-day or full-day experiences. Some options even include additional activities such as coffee experiences at local farms.
Besides complying with regulations, having a naturalist guide greatly enhances the experience, as they provide valuable knowledge and interpretation — allowing you not only to see, but truly understand the unique ecosystem of Galápagos.
