During Holy Week, the city of Quito changes. The streets become quiet. People walk slowly. The air smells like incense. You don’t just see a tradition—you feel it.
Every year, thousands join the Good Friday procession, the most important event of the week. But what makes it so special are the people who take part—the characters who bring this story to life.
👣 Jesús del Gran Poder
A sacred statue of Jesus in a purple robe and crown of thorns. As it passes, many cry or pray in silence.
🟣 The Cucuruchos
Men and women in purple robes and tall hoods. Many carry crosses or walk barefoot. Each step is a personal promise or prayer.
🌺 The Verónicas
Women dressed in white and veils, walking quietly to honor the woman who wiped Jesus’ face. They represent compassion and strength.
⚔️ The Roman Soldiers
Figures in armor who recall the soldiers from the Passion story—symbols of judgment and history.
🕯️ The People
From locals to visitors, thousands walk, pray, or simply observe. Everyone feels something.
In Quito, you don’t just watch Holy Week.
You live it.
