Have you ever heard anyone sing like this? 🎶🇪🇨 What you are hearing is Kichwa. The ancient language of the Andes that the Spanish tried to silence for 500 years — and could not kill. Two Otavaleño women climbed into our van on the way to Otavalo — in full traditional dress — and gave us a gift we never expected. Then the Plaza de los Ponchos. Then I met my TikTok ESL student Ciara in person for the very first time. And we sang together. Oh — and I ate lunch off a volcano. 🌋😄
ANYI. TINKU. SUMAK. MUNAY. 🌿
Day 8 in Otavalo — one of the most magical days of my life. ✨🇪🇨

One foot in the north. One foot in the south. But this isn't even the real equator. 😄🌍 Three attempts. Three locations. Three generations of getting closer to the truth. Quitsato is the TRUE equator — confirmed by satellite AND visible from outer space. Zero degrees. Zero minutes. Zero seconds. This place changed the way I see everything. 🌞✨🇪🇨

Day 8 took us north to Cayambe 🌋🇪🇨 First stop — Equatorial Biscochos! We watched a master baker transform a massive ball of dough into Ecuador's most beloved buttery biscuit — twice baked since the 1500s. Two temperatures. Two times in the oven. With queso de hoja, hot chocolate, caramel cream AND a taste of guarango — the ancient agave drink of the Andes. And Volcán Cayambe watching over us the whole time. 🍪☕✨

Day 7 Part 2 🇪🇨 After the Teleférico we headed straight to Ceviches Pedro & Pablo for Ecuador's most beloved dish...Encebollado. A rich fish soup that Ecuadorians eat for breakfast. Yes breakfast. Then, the Artesanal Market. So many colors. So many souvenirs. So much Ecuador. 🍲🎨✨

Day 7 ;The TelefériQo in Quito 🚡🇪🇨 We rode one of the highest cable cars in the world up the slopes of Pichincha Volcano...nearly 13,000 feet above sea level. Volcanoes in every direction. A swing over Quito. Arms wide open on the edge of the Andes. And it all started with a stunning Pachamama painting by indigenous artist Tenaz. Ecuador — you never stop. 🌋✨

Day 6 Part 5: Hermosas Vistas, Quito 🌃🇪🇨 We walked in and there he was. Julio Jaramillo. I gave him a hug and a kiss. Obviously. 😄 Empanadas, the most gorgeous Quito skyline, the Panecillo lit up at night, the Basílica in the distance ...and a stunning crucifix on the way out. God bookended this entire day. From Mass and St. John Bosco all the way to Julio. 🙏🎶✨

Day 6 Part 4; Museo Templo del Sol 🌞🇪🇨 A hidden gem just around the bend from Intiñan. Built entirely of Andean stone by indigenous painter and sculptor Cristóbal Ortega Maila. Ancient artifacts, powerful sculptures, a healing room, and a sun face that stopped us cold. This place is not optional. 🌞✨

Day 6 Part 3 : The Intiñan Museum 🌍🇪🇨 Just around the corner from Mitad del Mundo...the GPS confirmed true equator. We stepped inside a 1875 original choza built for the Caiza family. Met the Diablo Huma * the Spirit Head* protector of the Andes. Watched water spin in opposite directions. Lost all our strength on the red line. And had the best time doing all of it. Science or magic? At Intiñan ♡♡ it's both. 😄✨

Day 6 Part 2: Mitad del Mundo 🌍🇪🇨 We walked through the indigenous homes of Ecuador, reunited with my beloved Godfather Uncle Marcelo, climbed to the top of the monument, and then; the dancers. From the coast and the Andes...all colors, all rhythms, all joy. Angel wings on a Sunday afternoon. And lunch at Calima where the walls told stories. Ecuador never stops giving. 🎶✨

Day 6 started with Mass at Parroquia María Auxiliadora in Quito 🇪🇨 A Salesian parish founded by St. John Bosco — who showed up for Angela for the third time on this trip. 🙏 The resurrected Christ waiting at the altar. Holy water blessings. A choir that made us stay long after Mass ended. And humitas for the road. God was in every detail of this day. ✨
