2016. Exactly 10 years ago! (SS16: April 28 – May 1, 2016)
BMX edition.
All Simple Session years have been special in their own way, and this Super Sweet 16th edition was no exception.
After a one-off adventure at Tondiraba Ice Hall in 2015 (our 15-year anniversary), we moved back to the iconic Unibet Arena — and it felt like coming home. The Finals took place on May 1st, with the sun shining outside and the arena absolutely boiling inside.
The rider line-up was pure crème de la crème of the global BMX scene. Honestly, it would have been easier to list who wasn’t there. An absolute legend of the sport came to congratulate Simple Session on its Sweet 16: Mat Hoffman, aka The Condor, joined us as a judge… and even went crowd surfing at the party.
This was also a tough year for the BMX world, as we lost one of our greatest icons a few months earlier — Dave Mirra (who had competed at Simple Session back in 2007). In tribute, riders began painting their pedals gold, inspired by Mirra’s famous gold bike at X Games. The movement was strong in Tallinn too.
In total, 66 riders entered the all-round Street & Park contest. 🏆 Kevin Peraza took his second Simple Session victory (after 2013), dominating both disciplines like a true all-terrain machine. Nick Bruce scored 🥈, and Mike Varga athlete page took 🥉.
Fan favourite Larry Edgar returned for his second Simple Session and, as expected, blasted higher than anyone with insane transfers. Kenneth Tencio "pollis" threw massive flair drops from the highest points of the course, while Daniel Wedemeijer sent it from the rooftops too — all hyped up by Darryl Nau and Andy Zeiss on the mic.
There was too much madness to count. The street line-up alone was unreal: Broc Raiford, Bruno Hoffmann, Courage Adams, Devon Smillie, Felix Prangenberg, Ben Lewis, Joris Coulomb, Ed Zunda, Lahsaan Kobza, Sean Ricany, Alex Donnachie, AK, and many more.
From the park side: Brandon Loupos, Brock Horneman, Daniel Dhers, Pat Casey (R.I.P. 🙏), Paul Thölen, Michael Beran, Kyle Baldock — plus a whole army of heavy hitters. We didn’t yet the Sister Session category that year, but Hannah Roberts showed up anyway and rode with the guys. Absolute champion.
Billy Perry, Anthony Panza, and Austin Augie came for their first Simple Session — and have basically been part of the family ever since. Reed Stark showed up for the first time, won Best Trick, and the rest is history. The local scene was deep too, with Andres Lainevool finishing as top Estonian in 21st place, missing the final by just one spot.
XDubai came on board as presenter for the event series, GoPro supported the event for the fourth year. TOMM¥ €A$H performed at one of our legendary nights — along with Vinny Puh. The parties were especially wild as it was Volber Night weekend, even by Simple Session standards.
Bad Pen Pal had their very first booth at the event, and have been tattooing the Simple Session crowd ever since. Vinz Olsen rolled in with the La Clef crew and got inspired to start DJing, which later led to the Olsen twins becoming resident DJs at our events.
The main event was streamed to millions of viewers worldwide in cooperation with Red Bull, hosted by Ed Leigh and Chris Doyle, with Hayley Edmonds reporting from the floor.
Pure energy. Pure BMX. Pure Simple Session. Fun times. Forever memories. ❤️
