The Great Aswan Dam
Egypt has a historical reputation for its dams, the first of which we have traces is believed to have been built around 2900 BC on the Nile, near Cairo, to collect water distributed in Menfi.
The Aswan Dam, which used five times the amount of materials used for the construction of the Pyramid of Cheops, served Egypt’s energy needs well until the 1950s when President Gamal Abn el-Nasser perceived that the country’s development needed an even larger dam. Faced with several funding problems, Nasser decided to nationalize the Suez Canal to obtain the necessary funds to build the dam. Following the Suez Crisis, it was the Soviet Union that provided technical advice and funds for the construction, which began in 1960 and ended in 1971, one year after Nasser’s passing.
