The Great Aswan Dam

Egypt has a historical reputation for its dams, the first of which we have traces is believed to have been built around 2900 BC on the Nile, near Cairo, to collect water distributed in Menfi.

The Aswan Dam, which used five times the amount of materials used for the construction of the Pyramid of Cheops, served Egypt’s energy needs well until the 1950s when President Gamal Abn el-Nasser perceived that the country’s development needed an even larger dam. Faced with several funding problems, Nasser decided to nationalize the Suez Canal to obtain the necessary funds to build the dam. Following the Suez Crisis, it was the Soviet Union that provided technical advice and funds for the construction, which began in 1960 and ended in 1971, one year after Nasser’s passing.

The beautiful island of Philae with its temples of Isis and Hathor, the Trojan Kiosk, and other small chapels are now easily accessible from Aswan. Take a tour around the island and discover this gem, its beautifully decorated temples, elegant kiosks, and unique chapels.

Prehistory of the island
The tiny island of Philae, only 450 meters long and less than 150 meters wide, captured the imagination of countless travelers in Egypt from the earliest times. It was famous for its beauty and was known as the “pearl of Egypt”. Plants and palm trees grew from the fertile deposits collected in the cracks of the granite. Pretty limestone temples and colonnades, kiosks, and shrines stood proudly against the horizon. When the first Aswan dam was built, the island was flooded for part of each year, from December to August. Between 1929 and 1934 the Aswan Dam was raised another 10 meters to a height of 44.5 meters. Philae had been flooded most of the year. Only the high pylon of the temple of Isis, and the kiosk of Trajan, located at the highest point, can be seen.

The Unfinished Obelisk

One of the marvelous monoliths of Aswan is the majestic Unfinished Obelisk which acts as a living proof of the unmatched intelligence and skill of ancient Egypt who wished to create an enormous tale from stone. It is without a doubt the largest obelisk ever constructed but unfortunately was uncompleted.
probably because during the process of separating the block of stone from the mother rock a huge crack opened, making it unusable and worthless for the stonemasons who had worked so hard to make it.

Where is the Temple of Kalabsha Located ?
location of the Kalabsha Temple was originally on the West Bank of the River Nile about 55 kilometers to the South of the center of the charming city of Aswan. However, after the construction of the High Dam, the water of the flood of the Nile used to cover it for about nine months every year.
This was why the temple was relocated to its current location at the shores of Lake Nasser in the southernmost region of Aswan Egypt.

Today, through this lake it’s easy to reach the temple of kalabsha by taking a motorboat to the location on the shores of Lake Nasser. Moreover, many travelers who tour Egypt prefer to visit the temple as part of the program of their visit during their Nile River journey from Aswan to the remarkable temple of Abu Simbel.

The new site of Kalabsha is famous for its unique Nubian temples such as the Kalabsha temple in Mandulis - one of the largest independent temples in Nubia.
