A Sunrise. A Sacred Sanctuary. A Wonder That Defied Time. ☀️🇪🇬

Twice a year, sunlight enters the Great Temple of Abu Simbel and reaches its innermost sanctuary—a remarkable alignment connecting ancient Egyptian architecture with the rising sun.

Built under Pharaoh Ramses II, the temple’s sanctuary features four statues. During the phenomenon, sunlight illuminates three of them, while Ptah, the god associated with the underworld, remains in shadow.

But this ancient wonder faced another extraordinary challenge.

In the 1960s, the rising waters created by the Aswan High Dam threatened to submerge Abu Simbel. Between 1964 and 1968, an international effort led by UNESCO helped relocate the temples to higher ground. Their orientation was carefully preserved, allowing the solar alignment to continue at the new site.

Egypt continues to remind the world that its story is still being written.
In a remarkable new discovery at the Marina El Alamein Archaeological Site on Egypt’s northwestern Mediterranean coast, an Egyptian archaeological mission has uncovered 18 ancient tombs, alongside surface burials, sarcophagi, and a rich collection of artifacts that open another window onto life in one of the region’s most important ancient coastal cities.

What makes this discovery especially fascinating is not only the number of tombs but also what they reveal about the people who once lived there. The newly uncovered cemetery includes 11 rock-cut hypogea reaching around eight meters deep and 7 limestone-built surface tombs, with some burial chambers still sealed since antiquity. Archaeologists also recovered pottery vessels, amphorae, oil lamps, altars, basins, and funerary objects that reflect a rich blend of Egyptian, Hellenistic, and Roman traditions.

Marina El Alamein is believed to correspond to the ancient city of Leukaspis, a once-thriving Mediterranean settlement that connected Egypt to the wider classical world. Each new layer uncovered here does more than add to a site map; it deepens our understanding of cultural exchange, burial traditions, and daily life on Egypt’s northern coast over two thousand years ago.

For those of us who work in travel, heritage, and destination storytelling, discoveries like this are a powerful reminder that Egypt is not only home to one of the world’s greatest ancient civilizations—it is also a living archaeological landscape, where history continues to emerge from the ground and reshape what we know.

And perhaps that is one of Egypt’s greatest strengths: even after millennia of exploration, it still has the power to surprise us.
