Researchers are discovering more about a workers town that was located 400 meters from the Sphinx. The town was used to house workers who were building the pyramid of Menkaure. The researchers have found that 4000 pounds of meat were slaughtered on a daily basis to feed the workers. This rich diet and the availability of medical care most likely made building the pyramids an attractive activity. Approximately 10,000 workers helped to build the Menkaure pyramid with a smaller workforce in the winter months and a large workforce in the summer months. A harbor has been found on the Red Sea that dates to the reign of King Khufu. The same king that the Great Pyramid in Giza was built for. This is believed to be the most ancient harbor found in Egypt. 40 papyri showing the details of life during King Khufu's reign were also found at the site. The papyri are extremely important because little is known about daily life during this time period. Workers houses, 30 caves, ship ropes and stone tools were also found at the site. The Sabil of Mohamed Ali Pasha is just past the old city gate of Bab Zuweila. Sabils were public drinking fountains built by the wealthy. Mohamed Ali built the Sabil in memory of his son, Ismail. He imported wood and white marble from Turkey in order to build it. The sabil stands on top of a Roman style 9 meter deep cistern. People who drank from the fountain often threw coins inside, some of these coins were excavated during the reconstruction of the fountain. The area around the sabil is rich in historic buildings. An administrative building and grain silos have been found at the site of Tel Habuwa near the Suez Canal. Some of the buildings and silos date to the time of the campaign of Ahmose I against the invading Hyksos. While other grain silos are from the reigns of Tuthmose III and Ramses II. The large storage capacity of the silos shows that there must have been a large number of Egyptian army forces there. You can read more about the find here: http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/9/40/66979/Heritage/Ancient-Egypt/Hyksos-buildings-are-the-latest-ancient-discovery-.aspx
