Before the smooth-sided pyramid, there were experiments.

Before there was a classic pyramid shape, Egyptian builders were still working it out.

At Saqqara, the Step Pyramid of Djoser stands as one of the earliest large stone structures. At nearby Dahshur, the Bent Pyramid shows a change of angle partway up, a design shift you can read from the ground.

It's history you can follow like a story, and the sites are often quieter than Giza. A good guide makes the progression click.
