🌊 A Lost Lighthouse… Found Beneath the Waters of Alexandria!
Something extraordinary has emerged from the underwater archaeological excavations in Alexandria’s Eastern Harbor. 🇪🇬
A joint Egyptian-European archaeological mission has uncovered fascinating pottery and glass artifacts dating from the 4th century BC to the 4th century AD.
But the most remarkable discovery came from the ancient Royal Quarter of Alexandria: a bronze seal ring engraved with an image of the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria — the Pharos! 🏛️🌊
The image closely resembles representations of the lighthouse known from 2nd-century AD coins, making this discovery truly exceptional. It is the first known seal ring ever found bearing an image of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria.
Could this tiny ring offer new clues about how the legendary lighthouse was managed and used during the Roman period?
The excavations are continuing at several underwater sites, including the Temple of Isis, the Royal Palace area of Antirhodos, the Western Mound, the remains of an obelisk, and the Timonium — associated with the palace of Mark Antony.
And this is only the beginning…
After the current season in Alexandria’s Eastern Harbor, the mission will continue its work in Abu Qir Bay.
