The Cairo # Marriott the U.S. Business Mission to Egypt #

The Cairo Marriott Hotel played host to the U.S. Business Mission to Egypt, from September 8-11. The delegation comprises of senior officials in 48 major U.S. companies to discuss aspects of economic and investment cooperation between the two countries.
The program of the visit incorporated several meetings with senior officials and M
inisters in the Egyptian government including President, Dr. Mohamed Morsy and Prime Minister Dr. Hisham Qandil. Meetings and discussions took place as well with political opposition parties and Egyptian businessmen to explore the investment opportunities in Egypt after the recent political developments.
Alongside the visit a work session on tourism was held at Verdi Salon followed by a lavish reception and dinner at the Eugenie and Royal Salons sponsored by Marriott International. Attending the work session was H.E. Mr. / Hisham Zaazou, Egyptian Minister of Tourism, H.E. Ambassador Anne Patterson, US Ambasador to Egypt and members of the American Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee. Receiving them was their host, Mr. Alex Kyriakidis, President and Managing Director Middle East and Africa, Marriott International. H.E. Minister Zaazou shared with the attendees his views and plans about the priorities, initiatives and challenges in the tourism sector which vies with oil as the number one contributor to Egypt’s GDP.

In his welcome speech Alex Kyriakidis said:” Egypt is one of our key markets, and Marriott has continued investing in the country. Marriott’s contribution to the Egyptian tourism sector is significant, with each of the seven Marriott hotels in the country being owned by Egyptian nationals. “ Kyriakidis added, “We have every confidence that Egypt will quickly bounce back and regain it’s year-round tourism destination crown and we look forward to our continued partnership with the Government in supporting the Minister’s growth strategy“.

In Egypt, archaeologists reopen tombs to woo tourists

GIZA, Egypt — More than 4,500 years since the paint was first applied, the reds, yellows and blues still stand out on the walls of the tomb of Queen Meresankh III.

A hunter throws a net to catch water birds, craftsmen make papyrus mats while a stream of people carry baskets filled with offerings for the afterlife.

Decorating the walls all around are paintings, reliefs and statues of Meresankh, draped in a leopard-skin cloak, standing beside her mother in a boat, pulling papyrus stems through the water or being entertained by musicians and singers.

Egypt’s tourism industry has been battered since last year’s revolution, but here, beside the pyramids of Giza, officials are trying to attract the visitors back.

The tomb of Meresankh, whose name means lover of life, will be opened to the public for the first time in nearly 25 years later this year, while five other tombs of high priests — buried under the desert sands for decades — will be thrown open.

“We want to give people a reason to come back, to give them something new,” said Ali Asfar, director general of archaeology on the Giza plateau.

Meresankh was a woman whose life was intimately bound up in the pharaoh’s incestuous rule. Her tomb lies a stone’s throw east of the Great Pyramid of her grandfather Khufu, better known as Cheops.

Her parents were brother and sister, and she married another of Khufu’s children — her uncle, Khafre, better known as Chephren, who built the second-largest pyramid here.

But Meresankh died suddenly, before her mother, who gave her own burial chamber for her daughter’s use.
American archaeologist George Reisner wrote of his delight at the discovery in 1927 as his team poked their heads through a gap at the top of the sand-filled doorway.

“Our eyes were first startled by the vivid colors of the reliefs and inscriptions around the northern part of this large chamber. None of us had ever seen anything like it,” he wrote in the magazine of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where a statuette of Meresankh and her mother is housed.

Smaller but still interesting

On the other side of the Great Pyramid, the western cemetery houses the tombs of high priests, such as Kaemankh, the royal treasurer and keeper of the king’s secrets.

It took site inspector Ashraf Mohie El Din and a team of more than 50 people around five months to clear about three feet of sand that had blanketed the area and clean the tombs.

Mohie El Din said that climbing the ladder into Kaemankh’s burial chamber was “one of my favorite adventures.”

It is not hard to see why. On the walls, more vivid and colorful paintings show fishing on the Nile, a cow being slaughtered and another giving birth. In the cramped space around the sarcophagus, Mohie El Din shines his torch on an “ancient party” with dancers and musicians playing harp and flute. Just above, carpenters make a bed and a chair.

To the south of Cairo, authorities are also planning to reopen the famous Serapeum at Sakkara, a massive underground temple where sacred bulls were thought to have been buried in the huge granite and basalt sarcophagi — each weighing 60 to 100 tons — that sit in chambers flanking the long galleries.

Egypt is a rather large country with 2 general seasons, a mild winter and a sunny summer. The majority of Egypt’s landscape is a desert, except for the White Mediterranean coast, the Nile Valley and the Delta.
Between November and March the daytimes are pleasantly warm, whereas evenings and nights are cool and enjoyable in all of Egypt.
In April and May temperatures are generally mild and this is an ideal time to visit any destination in Egypt.
From June to September the weather is very hot, dry in the desert areas and humid in the Nile Valley and on the White Med coast. Sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat and good hydration are essential, and trips to the desert areas aren’t advisable in that period of the year.
Late September and October, as well as April and May are thus ideal for touring Egypt. And the November to February period offers the pleasant balmy weather that is perfect for cruising down the Nile.
The Red Sea Riviera has great weather all year round; it is thus the perfect sun & sea destination to escape to when the sky gets too cloudy back in your homeland.

NEWS : Ministries of Tourism and Environment sign a cooperation protocol with CEDAR Tree Foundation for Eco Labels

In line with the constant effort of the Ministry of Tourism exerted in the field of ecology, H.E. Mr. Mounir Fakhry Abdel Nour, Minister of Tourism, signed a protocol of cooperation in the field of Eco-Label with the Ministry of Environment and the Euro-Arab Organization for Environment, whose CEO is Dr. Nadia Makram Ebeid .
This agreement stresses on the importance in the empowerment of Egyptian hotels to meet the challenges facing the tourism sector, as one of the main requirements of the European tourism sector is to deal with hotels bearing the Eco Labels.
This protocol will help raise awareness on environmental requirements regarding waste management, water and electricity rationalization, and most importantly, will help change the concepts regarding the importance of preserving the environmental requirements.
It will apply international environmental standards in the Egyptian hotels and encourage them to preserve the environment by reducing carbon emissions, waste treatment and energy saving.
Two other protocols of cooperation were signed between Cedar Tree Foundation and the Egyptian Chamber of Tourism Establishments and CEDAR and the travel agencies.
The implementation of such protocols will contribute mainly to the development of sustainable tourism in Egypt as it would be a major factor in the development of green tourism, which is currently an important factor in attracting tourists, added Mr. Hisham Zaazou, First Deputy Minister of Tourism.
