Ras El Tin Palace
The Palace construction was initiated by Mohamed Ali himself in 1834 to take the shape of a Roman fort and to serve as another ruling headquarters similar to the functions of Salah El-Din Citadel. Architect Yezi Bek, was commissioned to design and build the Palace.
Construction works ran from1834-1848 and concluded after 13 years of labor. The only remnant of the older version of the Palace is the eastern gate, “Mohamed Ali Gate” and some granite columns.
During the epoch of Khedive Ismael, Ras El Tin Palace became the summer dwelling of Mohamed Ali dynasty.
Under the reign of King Fouad I, the Palace underwent a reconstruction phase to hold 3 floors and was refurnished to resonate contemporariness across the unique architectural design. A spectacular mosque was annexed to the Palace.
The Princesses’ Building was annexed by King Farouk for the Queen and princesses to spend the summer in Ras El Tin Palace in Alexandria.
Khedive Ismail constructed a railway station within the Palace to travel with the family from Cairo to Alexandria and vice versa. It was renovated by King Fouad I in 1920.
