If you are thinking about booking a dahabiya tour or have already joined us onboard, fascinating reading is "A Thousand Miles Up the Nile" by Amelia Edwards. The book documented her dahabiya trip in the late 1800s, and there is a free download at https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/70565

Now you can learn about Amelia's tour of the USA to promote the book, in an excellent presentation by Kathleen Sheppard for the Egypt Exploration Society (of which Amelia Edwards was a founder).

Spotlight Lecture: A Thousand Miles Up the Hudson
The 1889-90 United States Lecture Tour of Amelia Edwards and Kate Bradbury

From November 1889 through March 1890, Amelia Edwards gave over 100 lectures all over the northeastern US, and as far West as Chicago and Minneapolis, exciting interest in Egypt everywhere she went. Alongside her every step of the way was her secretary, assistant, hair and makeup artist, and friend, Kate Bradbury. Using Bradbury’s letters home during the tour, newspaper reports, and Edwards’ lectures, this presentation outlines their journey and their impact on Egyptology in the US.

Located just south of Luxor, El Kab is one of Egypt’s lesser-known but most historically significant sites. Despite flying under the radar for many travelers, El Kab was once a vibrant capital of Upper Egypt and offers a treasure trove of insights into the country’s ancient past.

What Makes El Kab Stand Out?
Military and Royal Connections: The site is famous for the tomb of Ahmose, son of Ebana, a soldier who fought in key battles to expel the Hyksos from Egypt. His tomb is a rare snapshot of the military history of Egypt during the early New Kingdom, with detailed inscriptions that highlight the life of a common soldier in a royal context.

Temples and Inscriptions: El Kab was dedicated to Nekhbet, the vulture goddess of Upper Egypt, whose temple was once a place of great religious significance. The few ruins that remain are rich with inscriptions and carvings, offering a nuanced look at ancient Egyptian religious practices and royal decrees.

Layered History: Unlike the more famous Egyptian sites, El Kab's story spans several periods, from the Old Kingdom to the Ptolemaic era, making it a layered mosaic of Egypt's evolution. As a result, El Kab gives a rare glimpse into how traditions, architecture, and beliefs changed across millennia.

If you’re seeking a quieter yet equally compelling look into Egypt’s history, El Kab stands as an open-air museum that captures the real, lived experiences of its ancient inhabitants.

Thanks to Maha Gamil for another evocative painting inspired by her Dahabiya Nile Sailing tour, titled “Bisaw ”.

Our visit to Bisaw is an opportunity to experience life in a fishing community.
This may include breakfast in the home of a village family, enjoying a walk through the farms and learn about some typically Egyptian plants, such as the doum tree. You may also meet some of the women and children and learn how sun bread is baked in homes here.

We join the local fishermen in their boats to share the experience of Nile fishing. Even those inexperienced in fishing are sure to enjoy being out in the boats observing the skills of these men who live in harmony with the Nile. The fish caught can be enjoyed as part of dinner that evening.

Bisaw is a leisurely insight into everyday life and culture, a change of pace and mindspace from visiting the ancient monuments along the Nile.
