A Journey to the Past in Alexandria's Old Streets
โAs a tour guide, I've seen how Alexandria's streets hold different meanings for everyone. But today, I witnessed a truly profound journey. I guided a Traveller who was following an old map back to her childhood, an experience that led us through the heart of the city's rich, diverse history.
โWe didn't just find her parents' old shop and home; her map was a guide to the soul of the city. Her memories brought us to St. Catherine's Church, where her family had been baptized generations ago. The architecture was stunning, a testament to the city's European heritage, but the real history was in her eyes as she stood before the grand doors.
โJust a short walk away, the journey continued. We passed the magnificent Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue, one of the largest in the Middle East, a silent yet powerful reminder of the once-thriving Jewish community in Alexandria. And right around the corner was Cavafy's House, the home of the great poet.
โIt was an incredible walk, showing how different cultures and faiths coexisted on these very same streets. This isn't just about finding old buildings; it's about connecting with the diverse layers that make up Alexandria. The city's true monuments are not just stone and mortarโthey're the stories woven into every street, every corner, and every memory.
