7 Secrets You Didn't Know About Luxor 🇪🇬

Think you know Luxor? Think again.
This is not just a city with temples. It's the world's largest open-air museum.

Here are 7 secrets even many visitors miss:

1. It was called "The City of 100 Gates"
Homer described it this way in the Iliad. Its ancient name was Thebes, and it was once the capital of the entire ancient world. You are literally walking through the center of history.

2. Karnak is NOT one temple.
It's the largest religious complex ever built by man. 30 different Pharaohs kept building it for over 2,000 years. You cannot see it all in one visit.

3. A 2.7 km avenue was buried under the city.
The Avenue of Sphinxes, connecting Luxor Temple to Karnak, lined with 1,350 sphinx statues. It was buried under houses and sand for thousands of years and was only fully reopened to the world in a grand ceremony in 2021.

4. There is a mosque built ON TOP of a Pharaonic temple.
Inside Luxor Temple itself, you'll find the Mosque of Abu al-Haggag, built 900 years ago on top of the ancient ruins. And people still pray there today. Layers of history on top of each other.

5. The Valley of the Kings is still revealing secrets.
We know of 63 tombs, but Tutankhamun's was the only one found intact. And just in 2023-2024, archaeologists discovered complete mummification workshops and new tombs on the West Bank.

6. Luxor Temple was built for the night.
Unlike any other temple in Egypt, it was built for the Opet Festival, which was celebrated at night. That's why visiting it illuminated at night is not just beautiful - it's how the Ancient Egyptians intended you to see it.

7. Luxor has its own solar alignment miracle.
Every December 21st, the sun rises and aligns perfectly through Karnak Temple's main axis into the Holy of Holies. The same miracle as Abu Simbel, but almost no one talks about it.
