St Antony & St Paul Monasteries

Just two hours drive from Hurghada you can visit the places where St Anthony and St Paul lived, two characters that marked deeply Christianity. Along the journey you will admire the egyptian desert and enjoy fantastic views: arid mountains alternate with vast expanses of golden sand. The guide will tell you, first of all, the story of Antony. He has led a hermit’s life and spent his existence inside a cave, dug into the mountain. You can visit this site and you will be impressed by the decorations and engravings still legible. We will climb a staircase with about 1000 steps to arrive inside the cave and we will give the time to observe carefully each detail. At the foot of the mount stands the Monastery dedicated to him, founded by monks at the saint’s death (even today the building houses more than 100 monks). Nearby stands a small church which preserved the body of the religious and where you can see paintings of medieval age. After lunch we’ll move to the monastery of St Paul, also arose where the monk spent his life: he led an ascetic life gathering in prayer inside the crypt which is located below the level of the monaster,Colorful decorations characterized this environment and you will find also a lot of ancient objects: some for liturgical rituals and some other else used for daily life (like an old olive press or lock for chains). Equally extraordinary is the presence of a source of water that flows from the ground.
