Key Archaeological Sites
1. Tanis (San Al-Hagar)
Historical Importance: Tanis was a major city during the 21st and 22nd dynasties, serving as a royal necropolis for pharaohs, nobles, and military leaders. It is often referred to as the "Luxor of the North" due to its monumental relics.
Features:
Temples dedicated to deities such as Amun, Mut, Khonsu, and Horus.
The royal tombs of Pharaohs like Psusennes I and Sheshonq III.
Colossal statues, obelisks, and columns from the reign of Ramses II.
Recent Developments: The site is being transformed into an open-air museum to preserve artifacts by mounting them on stone slabs to protect against moisture and subsoil water.
2. Tal Basta (Bubastis)
Historical Importance: Bubastis was the capital during the 22nd Dynasty and a center of worship for Bastet, the feline goddess of fertility and protection.
Features:
Temple of Bastet.
Burial grounds for cats, reflecting their sacred status in ancient Egyptian culture.
Museum showcasing relics from the site.
3. Qantir
Believed to be the ancient city of Pi-Ramesse, which served as a capital during the reign of Ramses II. It contains remnants from his era, including structures tied to his administration.
4. Tal el-Daba'a
Associated with Avaris, another significant city in ancient Egypt. It played a key role during the Hyksos period and contains traces of pre-dynastic and post-dynastic history.
5. Belbes
Known for its Islamic heritage, including Sadat Quraysh Mosque, which is considered one of Egypt's oldest mosques built during Amr ibn al-As's conquest.
Cultural Significance
Al-Sharqia is often referred to as Egypt’s eastern gate due to its strategic location that historically served as a point of entry for invaders.
The governorate has connections to biblical figures such as Moses and Joseph, adding religious significance to its historical narrative.
