Standing in front of such a majestic gem and looking at the ancient mystery is unlike anything else. Celebrated since ancient Egypt, Ramses II built his temple at Abu Simbel so that the internal chamber would light up two times a year: once on the anniversary of his accession to the throne on February, 22nd, and once on his birthday on October, 22nd (today).
During the Sun Festival, crowds gather before sunrise to observe the stream of light slowly sneaking through the stone and illuminating Ramses, Ra, and Amun statuettes. There is only one statue in the shade on these two special days - the statue of Ptah, the god of darkness!
Outside the temple are performed Nubian and multinational folkloric shows during the sun festival.
