Ramses II (Usermaatre Setepenre)
Son of Seti I and Tuya
New Kingdom, Nineteenth Dynasty

King (Ramesses II) is the most famous king of the New Kingdom, as he succeeded his father King (Seti I), and became king at the age of between twenty-five and thirty years. He enjoyed a long reign of about sixty-seven years, and left behind a huge amount of monuments and inscriptions.

King Ramses II had many queens and fathered about a hundred children, while his main wife was the great queen (Nefertari), for whom he built a temple near his temple (Abu Simbel) in Nubia. Her tomb in the Valley of the Queens is the most beautiful tomb in the Theban Necropolis. It is likely that King Ramses II also married his daughter (Merit Amun). King Ramses II is considered one of the greatest warriors of Egypt. He recorded the events of the Battle of Kadesh - which took place in the fifth year of his reign against the Hittite Kingdom - on multiple monuments. Although the actual outcome of the battle was equal on both sides, the king was extremely proud of his personal courage and military prowess, boasting that he had single-handedly saved Egypt from a crushing defeat. He continued to skirmish with the Hittites for many years, but eventually signed a peace treaty - the first in history - with their king, and married his daughter to complete the alliance he had established. The tomb of the ambassador who delivered the peace treaty was found in Saqqara. King Ramses II built temples all over Egypt and Nubia. His most famous construction projects include the Temple of Abu Simbel and the Ramesseum – dedicated to his funerary cult – as well as his additions to the Temple of Luxor. He also founded a new capital, Pi-Ramesses, in the Delta. He also erected many of his own statues and seized a large number of other statues that had belonged to previous kings. King Ramses II was originally buried in tomb KV7, but his body was moved to the Deir el-Bahari cache to protect it from looting. In the late 20th century, the mummy was sent to the Musée de l’Homme in Paris for study and restoration, as it was in poor condition. Interestingly, his official travel document listed his occupation as “deceased king.”
