📜 Judgment Day in Ancient Egypt – From the Book of the Dead
This powerful scene from the Book of the Dead illustrates the ancient Egyptian concept of the Weighing of the Heart — a key moment on the journey to the afterlife.
At the center of the scene:
⚖️ The heart of the deceased is weighed against the feather of Ma'at, goddess of truth and justice.
🖋 If the heart is lighter or equal, the soul is deemed pure and allowed to continue into the afterlife.
🐊 But if the heart is heavier, it is fed to the terrifying creature Ammit, the devourer — part lion, hippopotamus, and crocodile — symbolizing total annihilation of the soul.
👁️🗨️ The ibis-headed god Thoth records the result, while Ma'at stands calmly nearby, holding her feather.
This striking papyrus is preserved at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo — a vivid window into the Egyptian understanding of morality, justice, and the eternal soul.
