Texts from long lost languages recovered in an ancient Egyptian monastery

A team of researchers was able to analyze ancient documents, in one of the oldest still running libraries in the world, in Saint Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai, Egypt, to reveal old layers of erased texts, using modern techniques.

Some of the recovered content included unknown ancient poems in Greek, and other texts in Latin and Arabic, but also texts in Caucasian Albanian, of which only stone inscriptions could be found until relatively recently. Another language that was revealed is a dialect of Aramaic called Christian Palestinian Aramaic, which was a mix of Syriac and Greek, and had shaped early Christianity.
