Did the Ancient Egyptians Dream of Flight?
Within the walls of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, a unique masterpiece awaits to take you on a journey into the depths of the ancient Egyptian imagination. This rare artifact—a model carved from sycamore fig wood—defies natural conventions; a bird without legs, featuring straight, outstretched wings as if frozen in a moment of eternal takeoff.
More than just a figurine, this piece symbolizes the deceased's profound desire to soar like a falcon, ascending to the heavens to accompany the Sun God on his celestial journey, as vividly described in ancient funerary texts.

This masterpiece is currently showcased in Gallery 22 (Upper Floor), among an exceptional collection of avian models discovered in Saqqara in 1898.
We are continuously enhancing our museum displays to provide a visual experience that honors the grandeur of our shared heritage.

Egypt has officially completed the reconstruction of the second solar boat of Pharaoh Khufu, marking a major milestone in archaeological conservation. The boat, which dates back more than 4,000 years, was discovered buried in a sealed pit beside the Great Pyramid of Giza and remained untouched for millennia.

The restoration process took years of meticulous work by Egyptian archaeologists and conservators, who reassembled thousands of wooden fragments using original ancient techniques. The solar boats were believed to be ceremonial vessels, intended to carry the pharaoh on his journey with the sun god Ra in the afterlife.

This newly reconstructed boat offers fresh insight into ancient Egyptian shipbuilding, religious beliefs, and engineering skills during the Fourth Dynasty. It now stands as one of the most significant surviving examples of ancient maritime craftsmanship ever discovered.
