Dean of Arabic Literature

Taha Hussein was born in November 1889 into modest upbringings, under unfortunate circumstances. Through ailment and disability, he would rise to become one of Egypt’s modernist titans. As a novelist and essayist, Hussein would distinguish himself as the “Dean of Arabic Literature,” and the “the greatest single intellectual and cultural influence on the literature of his period” – a claim supported by his 21 Nobel Prize nominations.

“To those burning with their yearning for justice,” wrote Hussein, “to those rendered sleepless by their fear of injustice; to those and those together, I direct these words.”

For years to come, until his passing on October 28, 1973, Hussein would go on to write prolifically. Some of his famous books include Doaa al Karawan (The Curlew’s Prayer, 1934), Wa’d al-Haqq (The Fulfilled Promise, 1949), and naturally, Al-Ayyam.

A Mummy with Beautiful Hair
When in 1898 Victor Loretin discovered a chamber with hidden mummies, he saw a woman with beautiful long hair. It was unusual to see such a beautiful face and so well preserved hair on a mummy.

In 2010, DNA tests by the team of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the National Geographic Society and Siemens confirmed the pretty “Elder Lady” discovered in KV35 was Queen Tiye. The research also confirmed that the woman was Tutankhamun’s grandmother, Akhenaten’s mother, and also the mother of the “Younger Lady” discovered in KV35.

Tiye: One of the Most Influential Women of Ancient Egypt

Tiye was the Great Royal Wife of the ancient Egyptian equivalent to Louis XIV – Amenhotep III. Her son Akhenaten, was one of the biggest causes of scandal during the pharaohs’ time in Egypt. She was also a grandmother of Tutankhamun, and the sister of Ay. She was one of the most influential women of Ancient Egypt, nonetheless, her name had been forgotten for centuries.

Tiye, known also as Taia, Tiy and Tiyi, is believed to have lived from about 1398 BC – 1338 BC. The story of her life is as mysterious as all the people who lived in this period. The world she lived in collapsed with the capital city of her son Akhenaten – Amarna.

canopic jar, in ancient Egyptian funerary ritual, covered vessel of wood, stone, pottery, or faience in which was buried the embalmed viscera removed from a body during the process of mummification. The earliest canopic jars, which came into use during the Old Kingdom (c. 2575–c. 2130 bce), had plain lids, but during the Middle Kingdom (c. 1938–c. 1630 bce) the jars were decorated with sculpted human heads; from the 19th dynasty until the end of the New Kingdom (1539–1075 bce), the heads represented the four sons of the god Horus (jackal-headed Duamutef, falcon-headed Qebehsenuf, human-headed Imset, and baboon-headed Hapy). From the 21st to the 25th dynasty (1075–664 bce), the practice began of returning the embalmed viscera to the body, prompting the appearance of “dummy” canopic jars, vessels in the shape of images of the sons of Horus but with no interior cavity.

Neferneferuaten Tasherit’s is the daughter of Akhenaten and Nefertiti. They had six known daughters total.

It is unknown what became of Neferneferuaten Tasherit, but it is has been suggested she died before Tutankhamun and Ankhesenpaaten came to the throne. It is possible she was one of the persons buried in chamber \alpha in the Royal Tomb in Amarna.
