A shot of the White Giant — the Heinrich Hertz Tower in the charming city of Hamburg. It never fails to impress with its unique architecture.
Did you know this is Hamburg’s television tower?
It is known as the Heinrich Hertz Tower, named after the famous German physicist. It’s not just a broadcasting tower — it’s an essential part of Hamburg’s identity.
The Heinrich Hertz Tower (Hamburg TV Tower) was built between:
• Start date: 1965 (or 1966, according to some sources)
• Completion date: 1968
• Official public opening: May 1, 1968
The tower is located at Lagerstrasse 2, 20357 Hamburg, next to the Messehallen exhibition center.
• The tower used to feature an observation deck at about 123.8 meters high and a revolving restaurant at 127.05 meters.
• The total height of the tower is 279.2 meters.
• Closure: The observation deck and restaurant were closed to the public in January 2001 due to high asbestos levels, which required extensive renovations.
There are ambitious plans to renovate and reopen the tower as a modern tourist attraction.
After years of planning, renovation work is expected to begin soon, with current estimates suggesting that the reopening could take place around 2028.
The renovated tower will include a ground-floor reception hall, modern elevators, a visitor platform, and possibly a restaurant and café.
