Dear TEDxMenofiaU fans,
Congratulations on what I’m sure was a fantastic event. I’m confident the excellent panel of speakers you hosted made this a memorable day.
I am very sorry I couldn’t be with you yesterday, despite sincere efforts to make it. Unfortunately, it was a difficult day at the hospital with more than one patient in a critical state mandating that I stay right beside them. As a matter of fact, I was scrubbed in the cath lab till 7pm and stayed till midnight in the ICU to make sure all is well. I know many of you are med school students, and will be able to relate. Practicing medicine and being able to help human beings at times when they are most vulnerable is an unmatched privilege; one that is worth all the hard work and sleepless nights that you are bound to encounter many many times throughout your careers. There will be times where you have to make difficult choices, but the the simple phrase “the patient always comes first” will not fail to guide you to the proper course of action. We make mistakes; it’s an inherent feature to medical practice, and to mankind at large. It is imperative we learn from these mistakes and avoid them in the future. This lifelong process is unavoidable. One mistake that should never be done is jeopardizing patients safety or placing their wellbeing as second priority. Patients trust that healthcare professionals will always work in their best interest, and this should ALWAYS be the case indeed.
Dynamism and crosstalk govern the Universe; solar systems, stars and planets are in continuous motion that is largely determined by interconnecting forces. The human body works in a very similar way; cells are in a continuous state of change, governed by sophisticated communication networks and feedback bloops. Youth forums like yours also provide a unique platform for sharing experiences, interaction between members and pave the way for change. This “dynamism and crosstalk” are fundamental for survival in an era of global revolution and multiple disruptive technologies.
I am very grateful to the organizers for the extraordinary efforts to make this event a success, and do look forward to being with you next year inshaaAllah.
