Tenerife isn’t one landscape. It’s five protected areas, and they barely look like the same island.

Which protected areas should you see in Tenerife? Nearly half the island is protected, and these five cover the main landscapes:

1️⃣ Teide National Park: volcanic crater, lava fields, Spain’s highest peak (3,715 m)
2️⃣ Corona Forestal Natural Park: the pine forest belt around Teide, the largest protected area in the Canary Islands
3️⃣ Teno Rural Park: the northwest cliffs, Masca and Punta de Teno
4️⃣ Anaga Rural Park: laurel forest, ridge trails and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
5️⃣ Coastal reserves: Montaña Roja, Malpaís de Güímar and Malpaís de la Rasca

Each one is its own day. If you have 9 days and a car, you can see all five.

El Médano is the south of Tenerife that doesn’t feel like a resort.

It’s a small surf town on the south-east coast, about 10 minutes from Tenerife South airport. There are no big hotel strips, just a boardwalk, cafés, and a long sandy beach under Montaña Roja. Kites fill the sky most afternoons.

Is El Médano a good place to stay in Tenerife? Yes, if you want a small town with a relaxed feel. But remember, El Médano is windy most of the year, which is why windsurfers and kitesurfers come here.

Save this if you’re choosing where to stay in the south 🤍

8-day road trip itinerary in Tenerife, by car or campervan.

Most of this route is in the north of Tenerife, which is the part most itineraries skip.

Day 1 Anaga · Day 2 La Laguna · Day 3 Teide · Day 4 La Orotava · Day 5 Garachico · Day 6 Teno · Day 7 El Médano · Day 8 Santa Cruz

Every stop has more nearby that’s worth combining. At Teide alone, Minas de San José and Roques de García are a few minutes apart. The longest drive of the week is Teno to El Médano, about 1h30.

If you’re travelling by car, split your stay between the north and the south of Tenerife, so you don’t spend your holiday driving.

All the places around each stop are on our Tenerife Map, so you can plan every day before you land. Link in bio 🤍

Is south Tenerife still warm enough for a beach day in autumn? Yes.
While northern Europe starts reaching for jackets, the south of Tenerife stays sunny, with air around 25–27°C and the sea still close to 23°C through October.
The water here is clear turquoise, the kind you can see the bottom through.

The name and exactly how to get there are on our Tenerife Map.

October in Tenerife — arguably the island at its calmest and most local. Clear skies, gentle seas, easing winds and the first signs of autumn in the north. Here’s what’s worth planning your trip to Tenerife in October around 👉

October is one of the best months of the year for stargazing in Tenerife. Crystal-clear skies, low light pollution and the altitude of Mount Teide (3,718m) make it one of the best places in Europe to see the night sky. And there are two meteor showers this month: the Draconids (6–10 October) and the Orionids (around 21 October).

🐋 October often brings the calmest seas of the whole year — ideal for whale and dolphin watching in Tenerife. Resident pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins live off the south-west coast all year; a morning boat tour from Los Gigantes, Los Cristianos or Puerto Colón gives the best chances of seeing them.

🍃 The summer trade winds start to ease off in October, and the north of Tenerife comes into its own — calmer, greener and far more local than the resort south, with the weather still warm and bright. A great time to base yourself around La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz or Garachico and explore Anaga, the w**e villages and the island’s real side.

🌰 Autumn is chestnut season in Tenerife’s northern hills. Several chestnut-tree walks wind through the villages of La Orotava, El Sauzal, La Matanza and La Victoria de Acentejo — the best known is the Ruta de los Castaños de Los Dornajos, in the heights of La Victoria. The trees turn golden and the first chestnuts start to fall in late October; a quiet, local walk few visitors know. The roasting and the new w**e come later, at San Martín in November — for now, October is all about the walk.

Save this for your October plans in Tenerife.

This is one of the most beautiful scenic roads in Tenerife and you don’t have it on your route.

One hint: it’s in Anaga Rural Park.

We’ve got it pinned on our map 😉

Tenerife weather isn’t one thing — the island runs on several climates at once.

Is Tenerife always sunny? Warm enough to swim? Too windy? Here’s the honest version.

The south is dry and sunny most of the year. The north is greener and cloudier, because the trade winds hit it first — same island, different weather.

The Atlantic sits around 19–23°C: making it swimmable year-round. And it’s only properly windy in a couple of spots — the north, and El Médano in the southeast (which is exactly why windsurfers love it).

So the real question isn’t “what’s the weather like” — it’s “which side of Tenerife do I want?”
