The Iberian Epic is done!
•
Tim:
That was 16 days of some of the most extraordinary riding I've ever done. The sheer scale and variety of terrain were overwhelming and breathtaking. From the deserts of the south to the forests and hailstorms of the north, Rocinante and I kept plugging away.
•
We met bar staff, pilgrims, cyclists, and confused onlookers.
We rode through oceans of barley, sunflowers, oak trees, and olives. Passed through countless beautiful villages and around some great cities.
Almost everywhere, no matter how exhausted, there was always the mental boost from an encouraging moment of human contact.
•
Usually, with big rides, the challenge is physical to begin with, and then mental, as everything starts to hurt, and it's a struggle to carry on.
With this one, it was the other way round. To begin with, I was scared of the scale and of what could go wrong. Mentally, I was very close to giving up.
But over the days, I relaxed a bit, calmed down, and started to really enjoy the physical experience.
So much so that the last day was the longest, and I felt that I could have gone on...
•
I'll have a maximum of one day on the sofa and then back at it 😉
•

Iberian Epic Day 15

Tim:
Yikes, that was tough.
I started super early today because I wanted to get through Seville before it woke up. It was fairly quiet but the bike route through the city was clearly designed by Satan. Some lethal crossings topped off by being filtered onto the Autovía (motorway, no cycling).
Anyway, once through, it was off to Ronda through the magnificent Serranía de Ronda.

Up with the sun and back into Andalucía!
As I turned south from León a few days ago, the mental lift I received was remarkable.
It's a mixture of the weather inproving, a slight but consistent tail wind and the fact that I'm now heading towards home rather than away from it.

Iberian Epic Day 12.

Tim:
I'm continuing to head south down the Vía de la Plata and passed through Salamanca this morning. It's a stunning city and the cathedral is magnificent.
Then I started climbing out of the Castilla y León flatlands and into the vast oak forests of Extremadura.
I'm staying in Béjar tonight and tomorrow I'm off to Cáceres.

Today was gorgeous! The weather was perfect, I started heading south, which felt emotional, and most of the day was on the gravel of the Vía de la Plata.
What a trail that is!
A perfect surface, poppies everywhere, peaceful and spring exploding everywhere.

Iberian Epic (ish) Day 10.

Tim:
A long day amongst the pilgrims today.
The majority of today's 163 km to León was along a section of the Camino de Santiago, and I shared it with hundreds of walkers on their way, presumably, to Santiago de Compostela.
•
It was nice to have the occasional human interaction, but after 6 hours of straight, flat riding a kangaroo had definitely got loose in the top paddock.🤪🤪
•
I'm off south towards Seville tomorrow and hopefully on some slightly different terrain 😉

Iberian Epic Day 9

Tim:
I left super early this morning as I knew it would be a tough one. The distance is one thing, but Rocinante (new bike name thanks to Ole ) and me total about 110kgs. And Spain is hilly!
The Basque Country was wonderful with its forests and medieval villages, and Castilla y León is vast and a cyclist's dream.
•
For those following the slow dot (arrow, actually), you may have noticed a number of changes to the planned route.
I've been avoiding the cities as much as possible and taking smaller roads/gravel paths wherever possible. I've also been avoiding the bigger climbs whenever I can 😉.
•
I'm off to León tomorrow and then a really big change:
I'm going to follow the famous Via de la Plata south towards Seville. Jenny and I have talked about riding this pilgrim's route for ages, and this seems the perfect opportunity. So, no Portugal!
I'm keeping the tag, tho. 😉

Into the Basque Country today and, my goodness, is it breathtaking! Dark, mysterious villages, vast open spaces, forests, rivers, and routes to die for.
I'm in Vitoria, the capital, as part of a rest day, and tomorrow I head into the mountains towards Santiago de Compostela.

The windmills of Navarra, the vineyards of La Rioja, 1000k done and then a beautiful campsite. Perfect.

Actually. Storms last night so no sleep and a headwind today for 80k that was so strong, I was blown to a standstill more than once. Horrendous.

Ups and downs. 😁

Tomorrow I'm off to the Basque Country and Vitoria, for a bit of R & R.
