🌉 The Vizcaya Bridge, known by the locals as the "Puente Colgante" (hanging bridge), connects the shores of Portugalete and Getxo near Bilbao.
If the Eiffel Tower came instantly to your mind, it's not by chance 😏. The basque architect Alberto de Palacio was a close collaborator of Gustave Eiffel, so the industrial look influence is crystal clear.
But there's more: this masterpiece of industrial iron civil construction has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it is the first and oldest mechanical transporter bridge. Now... What is this❓
This is the way it works: first, we took the panoramic elevator to the top and walked across the bridge platform to Portugalete. But, for the way back, there is the option of stepping onto a hanging gondola which smoothly "flies" above the river carrying passengers and vehicles (see part 2).
