Long before the Sagrada Família touched the sky, the true heart of Barcelona beat in the narrow, stone streets of the Gothic Quarter.

In the year 1298, builders began working on a grand project, The Barcelona Cathedral. It took more than 150 years of hard work, heavy stones, and incredible art to finish it. But the most famous part of the Cathedral isn’t made of stone, it’s made of feathers!

If you walk inside to the hidden garden courtyard (called the cloister), you will hear a very strange sound - honking. For hundreds of years, 13 white geese have lived inside the Cathedral garden. Why 13?

They live there to honor Saint Eulalia, a young local girl who became the co-patron saint of Barcelona long ago. According to the legend, she was only 13 years old when she stood up for her beliefs. The 13 snow-white geese represent every year of her life, and they have guarded the peaceful courtyard ever since.

In the past, the geese also served a fun purpose: their loud honking acted as a natural security alarm to keep thieves away from the Cathedral's treasures at night!
