l’esglèsia de Sant Felip Neri in was Gaudí’s favorite church. These holes in the walls exist because fascist Italian aviation bombed Barcelona with 250 kg bombs (they usually used 40-60 kg ones). They weren’t targeting infrastructure but people. Most of those who died were children seeking refuge in the air raid shelter ; many of them had come from Madrid because it was considered safer, as Madrid was on the front line of the Spanish Civil War. Comment if you want to show you Barcelona 😊

Casa Navàs, Reus. Due to its singularity, Casa Navàs is one of the best examples of Modernism in Europe. Built between 1901 and 1908 by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and the decorator Gaspar Homar, it is the only modernist work in Europe that has survived to the present day as it was first opened. Behind the image of today’s damaged building hides the most complete, fantastic and splendid interior of Catalan modernism. Entering the house is like entering a large artificial stone garden full of flourishes in which the stained glass windows of more than two hundred square metres of surface between skylights, partitions, doors and windows stand out. Ceramics, paintings, silk fabrics, lamps, etc. are also preserved. To do all these works, Domènech i Montaner surrounded himself with the best craftsmen of the time.

Santes Creus Monastery came into being in 1160 under the patronage of the Montcada and Cervelló houses and Count Ramon Berenguer IV. On the banks of the River Gaià the monks, who came from the Occitan Abbaye de Grandselve, found the ideal site for building a monastery which, until 1835, would be the centre of one of the largest and most influential monastic domains of the Kingdom of Aragón. Its history and the Cistercian way of life are described in the audiovisual “The Cistercian World”.

Santes Creus reached its time of greatest splendour in the 13th and 14th centuries thanks to the favour of the royal house and the nobility. Two kings, Pere el Gran and Jaume II el Just, and Jaume’s queen Blanche d’Anjou chose it for their pantheon and were active protectors and patrons. Their remains lie in the church in two tombs, considered masterpieces of early Catalan Gothic and the only ones of the Kingdom of Aragón to have survived intact.

Like few Cistercian abbeys, the ground plan of the monastery follows the model drawn by St Bernard in order to organise the spaces according to the needs of the community. The austerity typical of the order is reflected in the first buildings, such as the church. But soon the splendour of the Gothic took over in spaces such as the 14th century cloister, the first in that style in the Kingdom of Aragón, remarkable for the artistic quality of the capitals and the tombs of the monarchs who took part in the conquest of Mallorca. ❤️😊

The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya is located in the Palau Nacional of Montjuïc, constructed for the International Exposition of 1929. In 1934 it opened its doors as the Museu d’Art de Catalunya, bringing together the medieval collection. Subsequently, in 1995, then as the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, the new rooms of Romanesque art were inaugurated, and in a successive way the public presentation of the collection was extended, a process that ended in 2004 with the integration of modern art.
Visiting the museum you can see the best collection of Romanesque mural painting in the world and the most representative artists of Catalan Modernism, such as Gaudí or Casas. Gothic art, great European Renaissance and Baroque painters, for example Tiziano or Velázquez, and the collection of photography, complete the collection. 📷

The Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes stands on one of the peaks of the Serra de Rodes, a mountain range right by the sea in the north of Alt Empordà. It is one of the many testimonials of Catalan Romanesque architecture, but it may also be one of the most architecturally sophisticated.

From the 11th to the 14th century it was the main spiritual centre of the county of Empúries and its splendor can be seen in the large dimensions of the monastic complex. This comprises the church, the bell tower, the cloister, the sacristies, the conventional rooms for everyday living and the Palau de l’Abat (the Abbot’s Palace).

The monastery is built in terraces in order to adapt to the terrain and the various buildings are arranged around the cloister and the church, built between the 10th and 11th centuries. In these two buildings you can see an exceptional example of Romanesque sculpture: the columns (original) and the capitals that crown them tell us about the classical influence that has marked this unique church.

On the outside, the ‘portalada’, designed by the Mestre de Cabestany, showed different scenes from the life of Christ carved in white marble. The scarce fragments that remain, give us a sample of their extraordinary quality, probably one of the best of its time.

From the monastery you can enjoy one of the best views of Cap de Creus. Shortly before reaching it, you will see the ruins of the medieval village of Santa Creu de Rodes, the most notable of these being the Church of Santa Helena de Rodes.

Right on Paseo de Sant Joan, between the streets of Valencia and Aragón, stands one of the most beautiful examples of neo-Gothic architecture in Barcelona . The current church of Sant Francesc de Sales was built between 1878 and 1885 as part of the convent of the Order of the Visitation of Saint Mary. After the convent was abandoned in 1936 by the Salesian nuns, the building was converted into a religious school and then into a parish church.
This construction of great elegance and beauty is considered the most important work of the architect Joan Martorell i Montells (1833-1906), born in Barcelona and teacher of Antoni Gaudí. ⛪️🕌🕍🛕🏛️⛩️

The works on what will be the tallest tower of the Sagrada Familia are progressing at full speed. When completed, it will measure 172.5 meters, which is equivalent to about eleven stories above the Mary tower. If the latter is crowned by a star, the Jesus tower will have a giant cross with four arms and a height of 17 meters at the top. Inside this future watchtower, there may be around eleven people simultaneously.

The tower will be completed by the end of next year, but it will be officially inaugurated in June 2026, during the commemoration of the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death.

The structure will be clad on the exterior with glazed white ceramic and on the interior with white onyx stone, providing a sense of lightness to the interior. “The windows consist of three layers of curved and laminated glass, achieved by polishing thicker pieces,” explains Mauricio Cortes, the architect in charge of the cross project. At the tip of each arm, a spotlight has been installed to illuminate the Barcelona sky.
