Falconry in Kyrgyzstan is a traditional nomadic hunting practice centered on training golden eagles, especially by hunters known as berkutchi. Historically, eagle hunters rode on horseback and used trained birds to catch animals like foxes and hares for food and fur.

The tradition is closely tied to Kyrgyz nomadic culture, horsemanship, and life in the mountains and steppes. Eagles are carefully trained over years, and many hunters see the relationship as a partnership with the bird.

At modern cultural festivals such as Salbuurun, eagle hunting demonstrations are often shown alongside mounted archery because they are all seen as parts of the same nomadic heritage.

Today, eagle hunting is preserved through cultural festivals, family traditions, and tourism. It is recognized as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, though modern demonstrations also raise debates about animal welfare and authenticity.

The Baka people are a seminomadic ethnic group inhabiting the Central African rainforests. They have a deep relationship with their environment: the forest is living and communicates with them.

Although the Baka people are located throughout different Central African countries, they are mainly concentrated in the southeastern rain forests of Cameroon. There, the Baka people represent roughly 30,000 individuals.

Their knowledge and adaptation to the rainforest far exceed that of any other ethnic group. Until not long ago, other tribes thought (and still do) that the Baka were capable of transforming themselves into animals through rituals and potions.

The Baka tribe worships a forest spirit called Ejengi. They believe him to be omnipresent, allowing him to punish transgressors within the confines of the forest. After hunting successfully, the Baka worship Ejengi with Thanksgiving songs and dances in a ritual called ’luma’.

These rituals are necessary for the spirit to appear before the Baka, as they believe that he only shows himself when harmony reigns. Ejengi also appears in other important moments in Baka’s life, for example, during the rite of passage.

For the Mundari people of South Sudan, cattle are identity. Every cow has its own name, and many men even compose songs dedicated to their favorite animals.

Caring for the cattle is at the center of daily life. At dawn, the herds head out to the grazing lands accompanied by young herders who protect, clean, and watch over them.

Gabon is a small, oil-rich country on the west coast of Central Africa, bordered by Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of the Congo. It’s one of the most forested countries in the world, with huge areas of untouched rainforest, low population density, and remarkable wildlife.

Gabon created a large protected park system in 2002. Parks like Loango National Park are famous for forest elephants, gorillas, hippos on beaches, whales, and empty Atlantic coastline.

With 2.5 million people living in a country roughly the size of the UK, so many areas feel remote and sparsely populated.

Less touristy than East or Southern African safari destinations, Gabon is an adventurous country focused on nature, isolation, and expedition-style experiences.

Kok Boru is the traditional horseback sport of Kyrgyzstan and one of the most important expressions of nomadic culture in Central Asia.

In At-Bashy, a high-altitude district near the Chinese border, kok boru is especially tied to rural identity, horsemanship, and festival life. The region is famous for strong horse culture because families there still maintain semi-nomadic pastoral traditions.

Two teams of riders compete on horseback over possession of a goat carcass. The goal is to carry it into a scoring circle or large goal structure while other riders try to wrest it away. The game is intensely physical, chaotic, strategic, and incredibly demanding for both horse and rider.

The Brokpa community is one of the most distinctive groups in A***n Valley, a remote cluster of villages in western Ladakh, India. The main villages associated with them are Dha, Hanu, Garkone, Darchik, and nearby settlements along the lower Indus River.

This community stands out for its aesthetics and traditional dress. The most recognizable feature is the elaborate floral headdress worn by women, called a 'tepi' in some villages. They symbolize fertility, vitality, connection to the land, and seasonal renewal.

The Brokpas also preserve their own language and customs. They are part of the wider Dardic-speaking peoples of the western Himalayas. Traditionally, they practiced mixed farming and high-altitude pastoralism. Apricots, barley, grapes, and walnuts are important crops in the fertile river valleys.

In addition, their relative isolation has helped maintain their identity. Local oral traditions say their ancestors migrated into the region centuries ago from areas farther west.

Some personal experiences shape us forever, dividing our lives into a ‘before’ and an ‘after’. They might be sudden events, such as a life-altering accident or the loss of a loved one. Other transitions take place more gradually, like the physical changes we undergo as we grow up and eventually grow old.

During our ethnographic trips around the world we have observed how all human societies have rituals related to coming-of-age. These rites function by ritually marking the transition of someone to full group membership. It also links individuals to the community and the community to the broader and more potent spiritual world.

In 2027 we will be experiencing rites of passage among tribal groups such as the Matis in Brazil, the Tchokwe in Angola, and the Kyrgyz nomads in Afghanistan.
