The route of this ethnohistorical trip to Afghanistan will begin in the vast, chaotic city of Kabul, which is steeped in layers of history.

We will continue towards Bamiyan. These central Buddhist lands are dominated by wild mountains, valleys and lakes. The Hazara and some Tajik communities live in this paradise.

Then, we will head to the arid and conservative south, the territory of the Pathan, one of the untamed peoples of Central Asia. We will visit the ancient city of Ghazni, the dazzling capital of the Ghaznavid Empire.

We will visit different highlights of Mazar-e Sharif, such as the bazaar (famous for its Turkmen carpets) and the shrine of Hazrat Ali, where many pilgrims annually celebrate Nouruz (Persian New Year).

The Paiute families who inhabited the Great Basin (in the western United States) lived semi-nomadic lives, adapting to seasonal resources. Their lives revolved around the extended family, which formed small, cohesive groups. They built temporary wikiups and practiced exogamous marriage.

There was a clear division of labor: men hunted, and women gathered food, prepared meals, cared for children, and made baskets and clothing. Their clothing was primarily made of skins.

Their economy was based on hunting and gathering, complemented by trade with neighboring tribes. However, the arrival of white settlers and the gold rush at the end of the 19th Century drastically impacted their way of life, forcing them to give up land and live on reservations.

The golden glasses of Akan chiefs. Long before shutter shades became a thing in popular culture, chiefs of the West African tribes wore barred up lenses made from solid gold.

Their purpose wasn’t for vision or sight but it was rather a social structure that symbolized the hierarchy. The purpose of the glasses was that so nobody could look the chief in the eyes, highlighting the significance and power dynamic within the ethnic group.

After the well-known Gerewol Festival of Niger, Chad and even Cameroon, Benin's Gerewol appears as another possibility to attend one of the most spectacular courtship rituals in Africa.

During the Gerewol Festival, young men demonstrate their physical capabilities through hypnotic dances that will attract their future wives. Benin's annual Gerewol is performed by the isolated Borgu-Mbororo nomads, whose chiefs and elders the Last Places team of anthropologists have developed a relationship with during the last 5 years.

Thanks to this relationship, we have exclusive access to this annual ceremony in the middle of the forested savannah of Northern Benin. Along with the Gerewol Festival, during this trip to Benin we will meet different ethnic groups such as the Yoruba, the Taneka or the Bariba.

The Bariba people are an ethnic group primarily found in the northeastern part of Benin, and are known for their rich cultural heritage, strong warrior traditions, and hierarchical political systems, which include kingdoms and chieftaincies.

The Bariba have a monarchical structure, with kings (called “Sinabé”) presiding over different territories. The most prominent monarch is the Sarkin Nikki, who holds ceremonial and spiritual authority over the Bariba people.

One of the most striking features of Bariba culture is their reverence for horses, as they are symbols of nobility, strength, and power. Ownership and display of horses are closely associated with the royal class and warrior elite, and the Nikki Horse Festival (also known as Gaani Festival) showcases the horses and serves as a cultural celebration of Bariba identity and unity.

During this anthropological trip to Benin, we will visit the kingdom of Nikki, the historic capital of the Bariba tribe. Upon arrival in this small town, we will greet the king and admire the royal horses and the rides of decorated horsemen.

The Mentawai Islands offer white sand beaches and warm water on their coast. In their interior, in the middle of the tropical jungle, live some 65,000 people belonging to the Mentawai ethnic group. It is about a hunter-gatherer community famous for their aesthetics: the sharp shape with which they shape their teeth and the tattoos that decorate the different parts of their body are something unique.

The Minangkabau are the world’s largest matrilineal society whose ancestral heritage is passed down from mothers to daughters. This people settled on the island of Sumatra, on ancient animist kingdoms and, to this day, still mostly professing Islam, they are still governed by the Adat, which collects their ancestral traditions, and places women at the center of the society.

Koryak family at their yaranga, no later than 1902.

Vladimir Jochelson’s monograph “Koryak”, written based on the results of expeditions from 1898-1901, paint a vivid picture of the Koryak house — yaranga or, more accurately, яяӈа / yayaŋi:

“The frame of the Koryak yaranga is very strong and can withstand the strongest wind. The straps that connect its wooden parts make the yaranga flexible and elastic. In a strong blizzard, it creaks and trembles like a ship at sea, but as soon as the wind dies down, it stands again firmly and straight, unless the wind has broken the ties. In the frost following the thaw, the straps harden and can break. The yaranga cover, if it is only well fitted to the frame, makes it stable and protects the posts and poles from the wind. The cover consists of reindeer skins sewn together, with the wool on the outside. [...] The height of these poles, on which the height of the dwelling depends, varies from 3.5 to 5 meters. [...] The diameter of a large Koryak yaranga is 8-9 meters.”

The Koryak ethnic group is indigenous to the northeastern part of Russia, specifically the Kamchatka Peninsula and the surrounding coastal areas along the Bering Sea. Historically, they inhabited the Koryak Autonomous Okrug, which was merged into Kamchatka Krai in 2007.
