Every tour walks past the same door. Most groups never go through it.

Behind it is the private cellar. Barrels, cool still air, and nobody else in the room. The w**ery team draw the tasting straight from the barrel, and pour reserve w**es that are not part of the standard visit.

It only works in small numbers. It is not a room that takes a crowd.

The castle at the heart of Oller del Mas dates back to 964.

More than a thousand years later, the same family is still here — thirty-six generations on.

That continuity is what makes this place different. The castle has been restored, the vineyards have evolved and the w**es have changed with them, but the estate has never stopped being lived in and worked.

It is not a piece of history preserved for visitors. It is a history that is still happening.

Across Spain’s certified w**e routes, October is the busiest month of the year. Even busier than August.

Once you are here, it makes sense.

Harvest has just come in. The light sits lower over the vineyards. The vines start to turn. The heat has eased, and the landscape feels slower, softer and much easier to enjoy.

The rack railway is the other way up, and in 2024 it carried 721,713 people, the best year in its twenty-one year history.

It matters more than it sounds. The cogwheel climbs slowly and the rock opens up beside you the whole way, which is how the mountain was meant to be approached. By car you simply arrive.

In 2006, abandoned vines at Oller del Mas revealed something worth bringing back: Picapoll Negre, a native grape variety of Pla de Bages.

The w**ery began the work of recovering the variety, and in 2012 released its first Picapoll Negre w**e.

Today, Oller del Mas’ Especial Picapoll Negre is recognised as a Vi de Finca Qualificada, one of Catalonia’s highest distinctions for w**es with a strong connection to a specific vineyard and terroir.

A native variety, recovered on the land where it had survived.

If there’s one place to discover Picapoll Negre, we think it should be here.

A cellar keeps its temperature naturally stable throughout the year. That consistency allows w**e to age slowly and gracefully.

Time in oak then softens the tannins and adds layers of spice, toast and vanilla that the grape alone could never provide.

Harvest has started at Oller del Mas.

For a few weeks the estate stops posing and starts working — fruit off the hill, the cellar running late, next year's w**e quietly beginning. It is the one stretch of the year the whole place is in motion, and it does not last long.

Did you know that Catalonia's patron saint is a Black Madonna?

The Virgin of Montserrat is known as La Moreneta — the little dark-skinned one.

A Romanesque wooden figure, allegedly darkened by age and centuries of candle smoke.

Do not miss the opportunity to walk up to her shrine and touch the orb. It is the one part of the statue you are allowed to reach.
