Here we are.
Yesterday was the first official event on cancer in AYAs (adolescents and young adults), the department Bruno was treated by, which our hospital started just two years before Bruno’s diagnosis, in 2022. His oncologists asked him to speak and since they are the best, Bruno was happy to oblige. He spoke naturally, comfortably. The whole point of the day was to highlight the needs of this age group, prove why they need their own department. When asked about getting a cancer diagnosis at his age, Bruno’s response was: “it’s the best possible age (sic). I got all the help I needed from home, yet I was old enough not to feel I grew up with cancer, it doesn’t define me.” When they asked him how he was doing he said great, super happy. The audience laughed.
Bruno wasn’t sure why.
