Today is the Feast of Our Lady of the Pillar (‘El Pilar’ in Spanish), commemorating a little known episode of Saint James’s stay in Spain.

After leaving Galicia, Our Lady appeared to Santiago mounted on a stone pillar and instructed him to build a chapel (the first-ever chapel built to venerate Our Lady). This happened by the Ebro River in the city of Zaragoza in Spain; and inside the Basilica of the Pillar you can still venerate the relic/pillar that was used by Our Lady.

Heads up, pilgrims: from October 16, the Pilgrim Masses in Santiago are moving. 🥾

Restoration work is under way around the Cathedral's main chapel ahead of the 2027 Holy Year, so the Masses will be celebrated at the nearby Church of San Agustín, right next to the Abastos Market, until further notice.

🕤 Pilgrim Masses at San Agustín: 9:30 am, 12:00 noon and 7:30 pm
⛪ The 7:30 am Mass stays in the Cathedral, in the Chapel of the Communion
🚪 The Cathedral remains open to visitors as usual, 7:00 am to 9:00 pm

One thing to know: there is no Botafumeiro at San Agustín.

Arriving before October 16? Nothing changes: Mass is still at the Cathedral.

From 16 October, the Pilgrim Masses in Santiago de Compostela will temporarily move from the Cathedral to the nearby Church of San Agustín.

You hear Santiago de Compostela before you see it.

A bagpipe echoing under the archway. Boots on stone. Then the square opens and the cathedral is just there, bigger than every photo you looked at before you left.

This is how the Camino de Santiago ends in Praza do Obradoiro: arms in the air, poles dropped, strangers who became friends somewhere in Galicia holding on to each other a little longer than usual.

Nobody arrives the same way. Some shout. Some go quiet. Some sit down on the ground and just look up.

What they share is the walk behind them. Every early start, every uphill stretch, every kilometre that felt too long is suddenly part of this.

You don't need to be an athlete or a believer to become a pilgrim. You need time, a pair of worn-in shoes and a reason of your own.
