🇬🇧 'Sam' is a Blainville´s Beaked Whale, juvenile male, that we spotted in our bay out from Puerto Calero during the month of July.

🐬 There is a register of this species in the Canary Islands, and thanks to we know it has never been spotted before, so we are very happy to be able to help in the research and know more about the animals that we are lucky to have in our waters. ✨

 📸 Photo-ID is a harmless technique of capture-recapture that helps to identify individual whales and dolphins from the unique marks on their dorsal fin or flukes, depending on the species. It can also help study of their social structure, habitat use, demography and other aspects of their life cycle!

📝 Did you know that we collect valuable information on cetaceans during our trips? Our record keeping started in 2015 and since then we have accumulated a great database of the different species that pass through our waters.

🐬 Existe un registro de esta especie en Canarias, y gracias a sabemos que nunca antes se había reportado, por lo que estamos muy felices de poder ayudar en la investigación y conocer más de los animales que tenemos la suerte de tener en nuestras aguas ✨

📸 La foto-identificación es una técnica inofensiva de captura-recaptura que ayuda a identificar individuos de ballenas y delfines debido a marcas únicas en su aleta dorsal o caudal, dependiendo de la especie. ¡También puede ayudar a estudiar su estructura social, uso del hábitat, demografía y otros aspectos de su ciclo de vida!

The IWDG’s research vessel, Celtic Mist, spent 6 weeks in total, exploring Icelandic waters, with the aim to locate Humpback and other whale species to obtain more photo-identification images. ⁠
The IWDG worked in collaboration with the Icelandic Marine and Freshwater Research Institute and with colleagues from the University of Iceland. ⁠
During the expedition, the IWDG visited coastal communities to promote links between our two island nations and remind the Icelandic people we share a responsibility for humpback whale conservation and management.⁠
