'Hellish' Weekend in Almería: Aemet Puts Entire Province on Heat Alert
The heat is relentless in the province of Almería, as well as in the rest of Spain. The heat wave that began on August 3rd will last at least 15 days. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), it is not expected to subside until next Monday, August 18th, and will experience one of its worst periods this weekend.
Although this Friday, August 15, only the municipalities of the West, the capital, and the metropolitan area are under a yellow heat warning, this situation will worsen as the hours pass, resulting in a hellish weekend for the province of Almería. The worst day will come next Sunday, the 17th, when the high temperature warning will rise to orange, resulting in several municipalities reaching temperatures around 45 degrees Celsius.
Orange Alert
This is according to the State Meteorological Agency's website, which indicates that on Saturday the heat warning will move from the West to the regions of Los Vélez and Almanzora. On Sunday, the entire province will be under a yellow alert in the capital, the West, Nacimiento, Campo de Tabernas, and the eastern part of Almería, and will rise to orange in the Almanzora Valley and Los Vélez.
A situation that, when translated into the mercury on thermometers, will leave more than a dozen Almería municipalities above 40 degrees Celsius and will make the heat wave feel its worst in several of them, with temperatures ranging between 42 and 43 degrees Celsius.

This will occur, for example, in towns such as Macael, Albox, Huércal-Overa, Los Gallardos, Lubrín, Sorbas, Tabernas, Bayarque, Serón, Nacimiento, and Gádor, which will exceed 40 degrees during the central hours of the day. Also hovering around 40 degrees are towns such as El Ejido, Berja, Laujar de Andarax, Ohanes, Abla, Fiñana, Gérgal, Viator, Níjar, Carboneras, Vera, Mojácar, Garrucha, and Vélez-Rubio and Vélez-Blanco.

Specifically, before the temperature drops, the state agency forecasts highs of over 36-39°C in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. It also predicts that temperatures will exceed 40-42°C in large areas of the southern half of the peninsula and in the Ebro and Duero depressions, and that 44°C cannot be ruled out in the valleys of the Guadiana, Guadalquivir, and Segura.
According to the AEMET forecast, the most likely scenario is that temperatures will begin to drop in the west of the country starting Monday due to the progressive entry of a cooler air mass from the Atlantic and increased instability, thus ending the heat wave episode. This drop will extend to the rest of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands over the following days.

However, the forecast predicts that temperatures on Monday will still be very high in the southeastern half of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, where they are likely to exceed 40-42°C. Starting Tuesday the 19th, temperatures could return to levels typical of this time of year.
Aside from this, the state agency has warned that minimum temperatures will remain very high across much of the country, especially over the weekend, with temperatures expected to remain below 22-25°C in areas of the southern half of the peninsula, Mediterranean coasts, the Ebro Valley, and depressions in the northeast.
