Today marks the beginning of Holy Week (Semana Santa) in Spain. The Palm Sunday, here is called "Domingo de ramos" which means Sunday of bouquets. Here we go with branches of olive trees (not palm leaves).
It is the only European country where you can experience such a unique event—a week full of devotion, sacrifices, faith, and processions.

Each procession carries a large platform with a massive sculpture of Jesus or the Virgin Mary. These platforms, called "pasos" (steps), symbolize the different steps of Jesus during Holy Week. The platforms are carried by "costaleros"—men, women, and even older children who bear a heavy weight on their shoulders. Interestingly, the costaleros are not visible because they are beneath the sculpture, hidden by a curtain. Only their feet can be seen during the movement.

Throughout this Holy Week, I will share more about this remarkable celebration. It is the most significant religious event in Spain, especially here in Andalusia, where we live.

Carnival in Chiclana de la Frontera from 1st to 9th of March - visit us to enjoy this special time in Andalucía ☀️☀️☀️

Carnival in Cádiz province is much more than fancy dress, music and street parade. Behind each carnival are lots and lots of work as all the groups are preparing their coplas (carnival cabaret song type) - writing lyrics, composing music, designing costumes and makeup). Normally they are groups of friends who work through out the year to be ready with their repertoire for carnival. So it's really worth it to see it once in a lifetime although it can be difficult to understand😝

Autumn in Cortijo Flamingos is very quiet and relaxing. Lovely spot for bird lovers - these couple of Royal Spoonbills I spotted today while I was walking dogs on nearby salt marches.
