In May, we had the pleasure of hosting two anglers from the UK for several days of fly fishing in Spain.
The trip began on one of Spain’s great rivers, where they experienced something that immediately caught their attention: the sheer number of barbel visible in the water. Fishing dry flies to wild barbel is already special, but watching fish move through such a large river system left a lasting impression.
On the following days, we explored smaller waters where the experience became even more unique. During spring, Spanish barbel gather to spawn, creating one of the most fascinating spectacles in European freshwater fishing. Fish move upstream, compete for position, and defend the best spawning areas. The males develop their characteristic dark colours, transforming familiar rivers into something completely different for a few weeks each year.
Beyond the fishing itself, there was plenty of good food, good company, and many fish brought to hand. One of the anglers even improved his casting during the trip, putting his new skills into practice immediately on the water.
