How to keep cool in the hot summer months in Spain is always a debate. Luckily Cave houses hold an all round all year round temperature of between 17 and 23°, as long as you manage the way that the air comes into the cave.
Cave homes always need to be ventilated as there is no through draft; when I am staying there in the hot months of the year I open the windows at night allowing glorious fresh air to fill the rooms (all of the windows have mosquito nets on so you don’t need to worry about letting them in!). I then trap that lovely cool air in the cave by closing the windows and doors as the sun comes round to our side of the hill at around 10:30 or 11 am.
Cave houses really are the natural Eco home. The beautiful arched walls stay gorgeously cool even when it is over 30° outside.

So what’s it like staying in a cave? In this part of Spain caves are a real cool and refreshing place to stay during the hot summer months. They are natural eco-homes and as they are hollowed from the Earth, they are free from the normal vibrations of daily life, that I am used to, coming from a city!
In the summer months, you can leave the windows open all morning until the sun comes around to this side of the hill, closing them will keep the nice fresh and cool air in during the day. The interior of the cave doesn’t usually go above 23° or 24° meaning that you do not need air-conditioning. In the winter they retain an average temperature of around 17°, so only minimal heating is needed.
I sleep soundly when I am here as it is so still and quiet. Definitely worth the experience!

I’ve been here at Casa Isadora for almost a week now, getting the house ready for our summer guests. Even with everything out of place, and working on the house and garden each day, it is such a joy to be here. Spring has truly sprung and as we had good rain this year, breaking a three year drought, the landscape is covered in flowers. Everything at the house is in bloom and growing so quickly, an endless round of gardening begins again!
How wonderful to be here at this time of year.

Arriving here on Saturday, yesterday afternoon I had my first pomegranate of the year. I have a few trees here, but my favourite, opposite the terrace has the most lovely champagne coloured flesh and seeds. It was perfectly sweet and ripe, just so pale in colour.
