The Islas Atlánticas National Park protects the Cíes and Ons archipelagos, their cliffs, beaches, seabird colonies and surrounding marine environment.

EXTREMADURA — SPAIN’S WILD INTERIOR

There is a very different side to Spain in Extremadura.

This huge region of open landscapes, dehesa, rocky river valleys and protected natural parks is one of the country's most important areas for wildlife.

Black vultures circle above the landscape, black storks nest in quiet valleys, and the region is home to some of Spain's most sought-after wildlife, including the Iberian lynx.

Wild Catalonia is a very different proposition from the Catalonia most visitors know.

Look north and the landscape rises into the Pyrenees, with high mountain lakes, forests and rugged peaks. Elsewhere you'll find ancient volcanic landscapes, Mediterranean forests and some of the most important wetlands in the region.

Catalonia has just one national park — Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici — as well as a remarkable collection of natural parks and protected landscapes.

September quietly transforms the Sierra de Grazalema.

The intense summer heat begins to ease, mornings become fresher and nature starts preparing for autumn. Bee-eaters gather before their migration, colourful autumn crocuses appear after the dry months, reptiles are still active and berries begin ripening across the mountains.

If you're planning a walking holiday or simply love wildlife, September is one of my favourite months to explore these mountains.
