There have a lot of coming and going since our last post. The Pate Posse have left the building and so have the Italian Stallions. What a fab bunch of guys and a joy to ride with..............a fond farewell to Chris too, a first time European Tourer and probably not the last time either, he loved it
The Cattermole Colaboration ride their last day yesterday and are chilling in Ljubljana today ahead of their journey home tomorrow. Thank you so much for joining us guys. It was a pleasure. In the meantime MMM have arrived AKA Mark, Mike and Matt while the 7 Scottish Contingent with and Kona the founder of the Crieff Cloverleaf https://www.cloverleaf.scot/ arrived yesterday. Busy busy busy.........

Prijedor to Ljubljana via the secret airbase – our last day.

A lovely ride from Bosnia and Herzegovina, through the northern Croatian countryside and back into Slovenia. A relatively short ride 3.5 hours if you go the shortest route, but we don’t do short routes, especially when we have an airbase to visit. For all the military buffs amongst us, today was a visit to the secret airbase.

The Željava Airbase, aka "Object 505", was a secret, underground military airbase located on the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, under the Plješevica mountain. It was one of the largest and most strategic airbases in Yugoslavia, designed to withstand potential nuclear attacks.
The airbase was built in complete secrecy over nearly two decades during the Cold War, with the nearby village of Željava being relocated due to the project. It featured over 3.5 km of underground tunnels, five runways, and was designed to house up to 80 aircraft. Željava was built to be a strategic part of Yugoslavia's defense system, capable of operating autonomously for months in case of an attack. It also served as an early warning centre and was equipped with advanced technology, including blast doors, air filtration systems, and multiple power sources.

The airbase was heavily damaged during the Bosnian War in the early 1990s and has been abandoned ever since. It’s now a popular site for urban explorers and those interested in its unique history and architecture. It also has a fabulous runway to race, sorry to ride, racing would be immature, inappropriate, dangerous, reckless but great fun……………I imagine !!!!!

After rest day in Sarajevo we headed on our penultimate days riding for this years Balkan Bonanza, heading to our last night in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

An early starts as we took in a visit to Titos secret bunker, on route to our next destination. Tito's bunker, is a Cold War-era nuclear bunker and military command centre located near the town of Konjic in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built to protect Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito and up to 350 members of his inner circle in the event of an atomic conflict, the structure is made up of residential areas for staff, conference rooms, offices, strategic planning rooms, and other areas. The bunker remained a state secret until after the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

Staying the night in Prijedor which is located in the north-western part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the banks of the Sana and Gomjenica rivers.
It is traditionally a part of the historical and cultural region of Bosanska Krajina in Bosnia and Herzegovina and sadly did not escape from heinous war crimes during the Bosnian war.
The terrain rises to the northeast of Prijedor which gradually becomes gradually becomes the mountain range of the Kozara mountain. Mountain means climbs and excellent, sweepy roads.
The ride followed some wonderful rivers, stunning scenery and beautifully lush green forests.
For us, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a secret gem of European riding, an absolute must.

From the peaceful, tranquil and relaxing Vrnjanka Banja with its population of less than 10,000 to the banging and vibrant city of Sarajevo with its inner city population of 275,524 but the wider city area has a population of more than 500,000. Sarajevo is the capital and the largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, based on the river Miljacka.
Sarajevo is the largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and a renowned for its traditional cultural and religious diversity, which includes followers of: Islam, Orthodox Christianity, Judaism, and Catholicism. Due to its long and rich history and affiliations, religious and cultural diversity, Sarajevo is sometimes called the "Jerusalem of Europe".
One route to Sarajevo we visited Srebrenica, humbling, harrowing and unforgettable sight.
A rest day today while we enjoy the sights and sounds of the city, walking tours, food, bazaars and chilling.
Tomorrow – a visit to Titos Bunker in as we make our way to Prijedor.

Yesterday we travelled from Skopje to Vrnjanka Banja a sweet little town in Serbia famous for it’s spas due to the many hot springs with temperatures measuring exactly that of the human body (37.5 degrees Celsius). The town is located near the Goč mountain range too, great for riding of course.
We stayed in the Zepter Hotel in the centre of town
Tomorrow into Bosnia and Herzegovina via some awesome roads plus a ‘must’ be sobering visit to Srebrenica Memorial. The town of Srebrenica came to global prominence as a result of events during the Bosnian War (1992–1995). Srebrenica was the site of genocidal killing of more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys, which was subsequently designated as an act of genocide by the ICTY and the International Court of Justice.
Tomorrow another bouncing Balkan city steeped in history………Sarajevo.
