TRAVEL INSPIRATION FRIDAY- Croatia
We are thrilled to launch our gorgeous, coastal food and wine itinerary in Croatia!
Croatia is one of the most beautiful wine destinations in the world, with an absolutely exquisite coastline stretching along the shimmering turquoise Adriatic Sea for over a thousand miles on the mainland alone. There are also more than twelve hundred islands, reefs, and rocky islets scattered along the seashore, of which about fifty are inhabited. Some of these islands- like Korčula, Brač, and Hvar – are home to dreamy villages and fine vineyards.
Croatia is much more than simply a gorgeous beach destination, though. It’s home to some of the loveliest historic towns and cities in Europe. The architecture reflects its fascinating heritage, drawing on influences as varied as Greece, Ancient Rome, Hungary, Venice, the Habsburgs, and the Ottomans. In terms of wine history, the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Ancient Romans brought vines to modern-day Croatia. Indeed, Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus, born in Sirmium (modern-day Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, near the Croatian border), is considered to be the “Father of Dalmatian viticulture”. It was the 13th-century Cistercian monasteries that then made the next big leap in winemaking. Kutjevo Monastery is, in fact, the oldest winery in Croatia, dating back to 1232.
The 21st century has welcomed a “Wine Renaissance” of small, premium vinegrowers and wine makers. Today, there are about a thousand wineries in Croatia, most of which are intimate and family-run and many of which have mesmerizing views of the sea. The food and wine on offer in Croatia now is a mouthwatering cultural hodgepodge of Central Europe and the Mediterranean.
